Agree with this wholeheartedly. There's no perfect response or opinion on this but fair discussion is needed to try and understand it the best you can. That's why referring to people as knobheads/scum, labelling opinions as pathetic, suggesting anyone against strict lockdowns wants to die (or anyone in favour of them doesn't care), offers no real value to that discussion. Sadly in most cases, although not exclusively, it's those against lockdowns that bear the brunt of that.

Not to mention so e studies have shown equivalent lung damage in asymptomatic covid patients to that found in acute cases.

    https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M20-3012

We just don't understand the long term effects of Covid on people yet and may not for years.

So let me get this straight, are you suggesting this is how we ought to have proceeded from where we were in March 2020?

They were your words. I was actually thinking about all those venues with big screens, a lot of which weren't pubs.

I'm saying it could have been an option. What's wrong with that? My grandparents were, as instructed and as they should have done, shielding with hundreds of thousands of others. They didn't come in to contact with anyone for months, contactless deliveries, etc.

Why do you seem so shocked that there might be a suggestion that some of us could have carried on working and using businesses alongside protecting the vulnerable, and then invested some of the furlough money in to areas where it might have made a difference, Like care homes, for example. We could have still protected the NSH being overwhelmed, but also avoided some of the irreversible impact on businesses, livelihoods and mental health. It's not a perfect solution by a long stretch, but I'm just Ben from Wakefield typing this when I should be working - not part of a team dedicated to trying to do better than we actually did.

    I'm middle class.

I can confirm that the middle classes can catch COVID.

Unless it detected that I'm originally from Birdwell and gave it me anyway.

My brother in law from Portishead didn't get it, so maybe it can detect if you're proper middle class or just acting up.

So, when not in lockdown the numbers went up, but then when we locked down the numbers went down and then as we lifted restrictions and people got a bit knobheadish at the Euros they went up again.

What numbers are you on about?

Despite low takeup recently we still have vaccinated a larger percentage of the population... in both full vaccination and single vaccination than anywhere in Europe with the exception of Gibraltar.

If the suggestion in the original post is that lockdowns actively cause cases of Covid, and therefore that lifting restrictions has caused the drop in cases over the last 5 days.... I don't think that makes any sense at all.

Now whether we think lockdowns are still sensible or not is a completely different matter. If they tried to enforce another one in October this year they'll really have a struggle to make people comply with it.

So, we have a virus whose main method of spread is person to personbetween people who are in close contact (less than 6 feet of seperation), through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, correct?

But you believe that allowing normal contact (or a lack of lockdown which is the same in effect) would have no impact on transfer?

I think a badly organised lockdown such as we had first time round led to quick transfer in hospitals and care-homes - but not having the lockdown would have had the same effect.

Having no lockdown would have meant, that what happened in care homes would have happened in every place where people gather - offices, schools, shops, factories etc etc.

You're wasting your time Rosco. He will come back with some response that will say he would have had no lockdown and would have protected the vulnerable, but fail to explain how you do that.

Not strictly true. Iceland and Malta both have a higher proportion of fully vaccinated people, although it's important to note that the data is a few days old from a few countries so there could be more. I'll be interested to watch the other countries overtake us in the next few weeks as their vaccination programmes go from strength to strength. It makes as much sense as Johnson’s ‘catch Covid live longer’. I swear he is actually Boris in disguise.

If we knew all this and it was so obvious to everyone as you claim that all these impacts would drive case numbers rapidly down - then why did SAGE members talk to a consensus of 100-200k cases per day?

I'll help you out - it's because all those people who championed lockdown policies got it wrong. As well you know.

Hey I’m not insisting you answer my posts straight away if at all. I’m not shocked at anything I simply wanted to understand where the starting point for this investment was. My recollection of the actual situation in March last year was that the government was too busy running around trying to find ppe for the front line workers, sourcing ventilators and erecting the Nightingales (which we couldn’t have manned up) to be coming up with such a tragedy.
Seriously though no other country in the western world that I can think off has come up with a solution to avoid the need for a combination of lockdowns, masking and social distancing to prevent their health systems being over run and I wouldn’t bet against more restrictions coming in over the next winter

Are you one of those people who’s all about championing personal choice and responsibility? I still wash loose fruit and veg before using and I wash my hands after touching anything I bought in the previous couple of days.

Aye, you're free to be as bonkers as you like, it's just a bit rich being mocked by someone who daren't touch the shopping they bought for two days.

Hey Tyketical Masterstroke, I'd also be interested to see what you think to this. No hostility here, just want to know why you think the whole world's scientific community has got this wrong
