Just been watching that documentary on Bury and their grief! Was just wondering if anyone had any memories of the place? Thankfully I wasn't there for the Cup defeat, and my only visit was it '79 for a 2-2 draw. All I seem to recollect of that evening as a 14 year old is we took over the ground on a Tuesday night, but the performance on the pitch was disappointing! Maybe it was a case of realisation that I knew we were going to struggle at that point (?) after a great promotion year prior.
That's the only time I've been, too. My old Barnsley favourite Pat Howard scored for Bury that night. We were going through a transitional period under Clarkey, moving on players from the promotion team and replacing them with much better players. We had a young lad making his only start for us called Paul Wormley.
Went for a rearranged game midweek in 2016, 0-0, Hammill was sent off in the second half and that was about the only thing of note that happened. Ground was a bit ramshackle. Glad I went though as that was the last time we'll probably ever play there, sadly.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35430350 Hammill sent off, Danny Rose cheered by the away end coming on, Danny Rose diving to try and win a penalty, Danny Rose with the embarrassment of being subbed off as a sub and it being so cold on the way home even though the car heater was on the dashboard was showing -4 over the tops so the hat and gloves stayed on.
I was at that 2-2 draw too. If memory serves me right Ronnie Glavin equalised for us in injury time….or is my memory playing tricks?
Was there in 85/86 ish, cold, dark midweek game, I think, I may be wrong, we had Kenny Burns playing for us, he may have been a sub, its a long time agi
I remember Ronnie equalising, but can't recall it being so late in the game. You're probably right, though, mate.
was there in 85/86 was in some kind of cage ,it had cage at front back and at the top, can not remember the score ,but remember thinking it was like we was in the zoo, was only young and expected us to win, but getting a sense of disappointment so we may have lost, it was another lifetime ago, will check my Facebook, see if I took any pictures or posted anything about the night
An obscure LDV vans or whatever it was called game in about 2002, they knocked us out 1-0. Pretty sure the crowd was less than 2,000.
I was there for that one when Rory Fallon chased a ball over the wall into the away fans. The drop was about six foot and daughter commented that Rory was the only player tall enough to get back on to the pitch without using a ladder.
Yep, I'm pretty sure you're right that it was Ronnie who equalised late on. They had Gordon Taylor playing on the wing before he went on to become the Sepp Blatter of the PFA. My only other visit was seeing them knock us out of the Cup one nil. And we were lucky to get nil.
Yes, but not a Reds game. My parents-in-law were living in Wigan at the time and I used to go to any game of interest which was nearby. So, my records show that I went to see Bury v Halifax Town (why, you ask? Haven't a clue, I reply) on 25th October 1975. It was 0-0 and a complete waste of money, but there were 7516 fans there and a good number from Halifax. The only interest, or incident in a drab game (typically defensive Halifax come for one point) was when the Halifax fans behind the goal to my right decided to go on the rampage around the rest of the ground, scattering Shakers fans as they went. I don't recall any injuries, nor many police in attendance, but i just stood back and watched as they rampaged by. Only incident to report. FYI the Bury team was: Forrest; Hoolikin, Kennedy; Nicholson (Jimmy ex Man U and Hudders), Hulme, Bailey; Smith, Phillips, Rowland, Riley, Williams (sub Buchan - brother of Martin of Man U) and Halifax Town: Gennoe; Harrold, Collins (later played for us); Veitch, Rhodes, Phelan; Jones, McHale (later played for us), Bell (later played for us), Gwyther, Blair. I surprised myself in realising that John Collins at full-back, Ray McHale in midfield and Derek Bell at forward all went on to play a significant number of games for us. Would you believe that McHale top scored for Halifax that season with twelve goals (only two pens as well). This didn't stop the game being a complete waste of time and money. The Halifax manager was still Alan Ball senior at that time, who was about as popular in Barnsley as Joey Barton is right now due to highly defensive, spoiling tactics and provocative behaviour towards Oakwell staff and fans. Tidy little ground, Gigg Lane. I hope it's a housing estate yet. Woodbines again!
Not to offend any Bury fans, I did mean to write, 'I hope it's NOT a housing estate yet. Sorry, Shakers.
I was due to go to a Bury game as part of a stag do a few years ago but only got as far as the Trackside Bar in the old train station , great bar , then went to Ramsbottom , a few decent pubs there as well .
I went to that. Think we lost and it was chucking down. We were crap! Bury had trevor ross ex Everton. He committed a horrendous tackle on one of our players. Kenny burns seemed to arrive from the other side of pitch to sort him out. He then got hold of wilf McGuinness and threatened to throw him over the wall into the stand.
