The Mercedes evolved from the Ross Braun car which Jenson won the 2009 title, with technical advances winning enough points early season before everyone else caught up. I think it was the Jaguar team before that.? When it became Mercedes, it wasn’t that competitive, Michael drove it & barely placed. Red Bull & Ferrari dominated, then. To suggest Lewis went straight into the fastest car is ********. He helped develop that car into what it is now, leaving the then more competitive McClaren to do so. Seb could put in a great quali lap & get a car home from pole, but he’s not a racer. Fair play to Fernando for keeping Lewis behind him, supporting his young team mate, but there’s old history there with Lewis too.
Wasn't Hamilton disqualified from qualifying and had to start from the back after not having enough fuel to get back to the pits? His team claimed that they'd 'accidentally' drained fuel from his car instead of putting it in before his final run
Think he qualified on pole but yeah, irregular fuel sample or something and started at the back. Maldonado won. Another one-off, rare race win. Ocon will be hoping not to remain in that little club. Although, to be one of only 111 drivers to win an F1 race is pretty special I suppose. I can't believe his compatriot Jean Alesi only ever won one race. But to be fair, he was around and in between the Senna/Prost/Schumacher years.
No, read it again. I’m suggesting it was a bonus because it was Lewis & would have made his young team mates victory that bit sweeter for Fernando.
Lewis is suffering from long covid yet somehow gone from well off the pace in second to clear at the top in the space of two races. The guy is a machine and will be knighted one day.
Fair play to him, today was impressive but he's 'somehow' managed it due to Verstappen being taken out in consecutive races
Thought it was Lewis yet again showing that only he could pull that car in to that kind of finish. Understand the limitations of Max’s car, but what a superb drive. The way he raced to consecutive laps of half a second faster than Max before making the first pit stop was genius. He’s such a clever and intelligent racer, it really makes a mockery of those claiming to be F1 experts who try and mock and belittle him so often. The guy literally is a machine and an all time great. Love Lewis!
eye-opening thread here.... now if they were running in this race (or even walking), then it could be interesting, maybe even exciting..
To come back to the OP, Bottas surely can't get another season at mercedes. He never looks like wining even when Lewis is knobbled. Not only that he doesn't seem to offer much other than not competing with Lewis. If you want to see how a good driver in your team gets the team a result you only have to look at Alonso yesterday, won it for Ocon. The only thing that will keep him there is that Mercedes dont want to play into Red Bull's hands by having two drivers who will compete with each other, letting Red Bull in.
Time line for Mercedes was: Tyrrell - BAR - Honda - Brawn - Mercedes. Red Bull was: Stewart GP - Jaguar (Ford) - Red Bull. That's why both teams are still based in the UK
Not sure on this. They're at risk in the constructor's championship due to how poor Bottas is performing, and they need to have a clear strategy for Russell if he is to be the heir to the Hamilton throne long term - nobody better for him to be learning from.
Wouldn't be surprised at all to see Russell moved up next season. As I said further up the thread Bottas looks a broken man.
I thought Bottas has done the “wingman” job very well the last couple of weeks and did well in quali on Saturday but that race start was horrible. The first corner even worse. A straight swap with him and George might be on the cards.
If I were Merc, I think I'd pull the trigger of Russel now. Announce it ASAP, giving him time in the simulator/around the team during the break so he's as prepared as possible for the next race. Can't see Bottas going back to Williams though. I think he's chalk **** on it and jump into a rally car of FormulaE.
