You really had the legside wides rule at that age group? I've only known it in premier and div1 sth Yorkshire league! I umpired a div3 game with 57 wides 1st innings, no legside wides rule and we were being lenient in the end. Standard of bowling was atrocious. Batting side didn't use all the overs as well.
On my life. It was to encourage young players to bowl and bat to the off side and not play across the line.
