He came over during a difficult period and was part of the team under Gerhard that kept us in the division and I believe this needs to be recognised and acknowledged.

Obviously, at the same time, we would liked to have seen a lot more from him as he has played well in Austria and in European competition but for whatever reason it didn't work out.

This looks like a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Good luck Marcel and thank you for your efforts.

I just hope we don't need to sell a player every window to survive its abit depressing if we do. But like I said we have some good young players who I wouldnt be suprised to see clubs come in for.

What a random post. There was nothing else that could be done with Mowatt. I've said oodles of times. Just like I don't blame him for running down his contract. Most would in his position.

It's not a criticism to highlight that if we're to maintain "a balanced budget" we have to make profit from player sales.

It's the world we live in. We're set up to do it and with a suppressed transfer market, it's even more difficult to do effectively. It's over a year since we last made a decent player profit, I'd be very surprised, and not a little worried if we didn't make one significant sale this window.

But he's right on one hand your saying he was still a loss etc but if we had sold in January and made a few quid you would have been the 1st to complain. Its a shame valerian went to West brom because he obviously had a big influence in him leaving to go there

To be fair we've been in a pandemic for a year and a half its a funny time even for football transfers. The last player we made a decent profit on was brown 2million was it we've? we've made near on 4 million from head coaches leaving and backroom staff since then though.

It's a loss. That's the cold hard fact of it. We did the right thing in keeping him. He played his heart out. I've said this dozens of times. Apparently this is deemed as criticism. Bizarre.

We have. But you also have to match that with spend (FRS2 if I recall rightly, unless its changed in the last 20 odd years!). We got 2M Euros for Struber, but I saw it mentioned that we paid a very significant amount to release him from Wolfsberger in the first place, hence why we probably inserted such a large release clause figure to try and make up for what we paid out.

We can't just look at a couple of profits in isolation, we have to match them to spend in the period and assess on that basis. The net profit from Ismael is likely largely wiped out just from the fines and costs from the MacDonald fiasco. Then you add covid losses which are likely to be significant, and these player losses that have crystallised this close season and you're likely in deficit.

It's a difficult balance to strike, but I'd rather sell a player to stay solvent rather than be reliant on borrowing and starting on the debt path.

Yes it is a loss on paper but like I said you can't expect to make money on each signing theres other ways in football where money is made. Alex was a massive player in our promotion season under stendel, then his goal and assists were vital as we stayed up under struber relegation that season would have cost us 6million minimum and with covid on top of that probley more I wouldnt like to imagine where we would be now. Then he was a big part in us reaching the play off semis last season. I've seen us buy players for 1 million plus and them do nothing so in my eyes he wasn't a loss and owes us nothing its similar to josh scowen when he left.
If Mr benson turns out as good of a player as Alex was over 4 years I don't mind him running his 4 year deal down either.

I've said multiple times I've no issue with what Mowatt did and rated him very highly, so I'm not sure why you keep repeating it.

If we constantly bring large numbers of our squad in on fees and they all run down their contracts or get paid off, we're in a pickle. We either have to sell, or we have to borrow. Pick one.

If we need to sell our best player every window were also in a pickle.

This is where we are. How do you operate in the championship without making profits on your players and not having to borrow?

Were barnsley we have a wage structure hence why we have lost players to other championship clubs who can times there wages by 4, winnall, Connor, pinnock, lindsay I could go on.
We sign young players with little or no championship experience as we can't afford the fees or wages for championship experience.
We haven't broke our transfer record since 1997
Were tipped for relegation by many this season by many as we have one of the smallest budgets and try live within our means.

We have some good young players who we should get good money for. I expect offers to come for our best players, for along as I've been a barnsley fan we have sold our best players and I'm sure it will continue so don't worry about that.

So we're in agreement. We have to sell our better players to balance the books. Thank goodness we sorted that out! ;-)

I didn't say we have to sell our best player every window to stay afloat. I said I've followed barnsley nearly 30 years and we've always sold our best players (not every window) so I wouldnt worry about that one.

What you think we would do if we were in Blackburns position were Southampton are sniffing around adam Armstrong ready to offer 20 million conway would have the flights booked from Robin Hood already and give him a lift to airport. Same if clubs come for helik,styles,woodrow,Britain,mads,Collins.... you won't see them for dust.

I've followed Barnsley since the early/mid 80's myself, so yes, I'm aware of our history of having to sell players.

As I say, we seem to be in agreement that we have to balance the books by selling players.
