Thanks ff - enjoyed looking at those. Re the last one taken behind the Ponty - I wish the owners would invest just a little to renew the 'Barnsley Football Club' lettering. Having the same shade of red rather than the varying shades in different letters right now, would make it look much smarter imo.

I think the new stand was a big improvement on the old Ponte End. Although I didn't go in there all that often I seem to remember the rake of the terracing was not that steep so getting a good view of the pitch was a challenge for some.

I remember getting stuck at the back wall for the first half of the Man Utd cup game in 1965 and missing most of the play at that Ponte end. I was only 12 but reasonably tall for my age but the view was hopeless. But then, as you could in those days, I took myself down to the other end for the second half and had a much better view from that old sliding gate halfway up the Kop. No recall of any segregation going on in a pretty decent crowd of 38 thousand.

I wish I could remember the significance of being at Oakwell with the Holy Trinity of Best, Law and Charlton in the opposition side but I can't. We lost 4-0 but it just seemed to pass me by, like something unreal. Playing the "big boys" was a rare event then, even rarer than now, so I should have taken it in better. I didn't buy a programme (they probably sold out in no time) but I did keep my ticket. I still have it. 2/6d it cost, or 12½p in new money :)

I didn't mind them knocking the Ponte down, but the social club,,,,,,,,now that's a very different matter!!!

The match was 1964. I've got a ticket among my memorabilia. ( Queens rd aka kop) would have to check but I've got 1 shilling in my head. (5p.)
    Edit
Archives ont t'internet suggest more like 4 shillings (20p) in general but that may mean Div 1 prices. (Premier)
    We were in div 3.

Apologies, you are right. It was 15 Feb 64. My ticket says Ground, so not for the Terrace or Stand. In other words anywhere in the other 3 Sides. And as I said it cost me 2/6d as a junior supporter

No need to apologise mate. Could it have been a mark up with it being Man Utd. ( missed the price on your post. Must have skipped past it. ) So was replying to the query. You’ve got me pondering how much I paid as a junior in 65/66. My first game. Thought it was less than the 2s 6d. You paid in 64. Age, eh. Lol. ( the ticket I’ve got. Was probably either my Dads ( although I think he’d stopped watching em by then. But it was Man Utd. ) or my elder brothers.

You’re probably right about the price going up because of the opposition, and you couldn’t blame the club for doing so seeing as we were very hard up in those days. This was my second season watching the Reds and I can’t recall the admission price for sure but it was probably around the 1/- to 1/6d mark. The Third round tie at the Old Show Ground was my first ever away game and we did well to get a 2-2 draw at the then Second Division Scunthorpe. I was at the replay of course when we triumphed 3-2 and then I saw us beat Bury in the Fourth Round, another Second Division side.

The Man Utd tie obviously gripped the whole town and we somehow managed to cram 38,076 into Oakwell. Big FA Cup ties really meant something in those days. Shame we didn’t manage a solitary goal but they were just too good for us.
