Barca are screwed at present. Over a billion euros in debt and ordered to reduce the wage bill to around the same level as what Crystal Palace for example are paying players

I get that part but last summer when he sent the fax saying he wanted to leave and was pushing for a transfer he wasn’t crying so why now? Is it maybe because it’s not his choice now maybe?

Crocodile tears, he says he really doesn't want to leave, don't then, play for 10k a week as a way of a thankyou to Barcelona, I'm sure you will never have to shop at the aldi's of the world for the rest of your life

Apparently Spanish law dictates any new contracts can’t be less then 50% of the previous one.

Borrowed 525 million last month to consolidate debts like paying off contracts etc as well.
    They sound in some trouble

Apparently Barca couldn't register him even if he played for free because of their current overall wages.

So what we're saying then is that suddenly, out of nowhere, he's found out that Barca are up the creek financially? Come off it. I'm sure both he and the club have known it for a long time. He will have known exactly what his wages were doing to the club he undoubtedly cares about but it seems he didn't care enough to do his bit for their stability and his love of playing for them.
I'm not making him out to be a villain but he's certainly not some naieve victim who wouldn't have been aware of what was coming down the road.
if I was playing for Barnsley and getting paid a million quid a week with no doubt the finest agents and advisors money could buy and a direct link to the ear of the Chairman I'm pretty damn sure I could have figured out or been told I was going to ruin the club at some point.

Link on Barca's woes churton , hopefully it ll work . Seems this has been 5/6 years in the making . A kind of Sheffield Wednesday scenario , just on a far larger scale .

Yep, and as I say, I'm sure everyone involved has walked into it with their eyes wide open.

I see what your saying but it ain't Messi s fault . Despite his off the scale wages he was the guy who brought all the money in for them , roughly 30% of total club income per year . Commercial brands were happy to pay whatever it took just to get their product placed next to the GOAT . Sadly all that extra revenue has been squandered on average players who never improved the side . Now with Messi gone turnover will plummet which will merely make the situation even worse .

Thankfully I support a club that will never pay £123m per season to anyone. Not even to the entire squad, manager and backroom staff combined. And if it ever did chuck money away like confetti, in those sorts of amounts, that would be it for me. I'd switch to watching a local non-league club.

Again 123 million is eye watering , but on the other hand he will bring you in 200 million plus in ad revenue . Messi has been a goose laying golden eggs for Barca , it's just that those eggs have been squandered .

Messi has been paid sums of money that I just can't comprehend. However I don't see how that has any real bearing on his emotional attachment to the club he has spent all his adult life representing. Yes he asked to leave last summer. Who's to say if he had he wouldn't have been upset then too?

Its been longer than that. Could they really afford the expensive players over the last 30 years to compete with Real Madrid?
