Yeah not much authentic or even that good for quite some time in Brick Lane, I think. I used to live and work near there and sampled probably every one of them :) It's more of a tourist / pissed up city workers, stop off these days. South Indian cuisine wise there are a few authentic ones in West Ham that my mate from Chennai has taken me quite a few times. I think Southall covers off more of the Punjabi cuisine but neither of those authentic restaurants has that many dishes that are all that familiar in a British curry house.

Authentic, no. Good, yes. Had a cracking meal pre-Swansea Playoffs with the London Tykes.

Said it once already but Darjeeling Express is getting rave reviews for quality and affordability. Tayyabs in Whitechapel is another good spot.

Those I've been to Paul have generally ( mostly a group of us) Been cheap and cheerful. Certainly not the Ritz. But can honestly say been value for money due mainly to the huge competition. Had far worse at much more expensive venues.
So difficult to rate Brick lane unless you've done em all. As a visitor rather than resident. Hard to judge.

As a lover of chinese meals n'all. Visited several in Chinatown and TBH. Pretty poor in the main. those I've been to. That is.

Found a good Nepalese place in Swindon when I was working there (Himalayan Yak if anyone is in the vicinity). Really enjoyed it, like a cross between Indian and Chinese - but no idea how authentic it was.

I would like to try some more Asian cuisines - Indonesia, Burmese, etc.

Pre-swansea play-off? Pissed up meal perchance? ALways helps :D
Tayabs is great. I have been there. I'd forgotten about that place. Spent a long time in that area and only went a couple of years back.

An American guy told me that he always visits Dum Byrani House in Soho whenever he visits London on Business (which used to be quite a few times a year). He raved about it so had to go and see what the fuss was about. They basically serve a curry pie. Was nice but not sure it would be the first place I'd want to try if I was visiting London a few times a year.

Oh no. Looks like they have permanently closed. I guess Covid has killed it off. :(

You're ignoring the 'pre' part. Was our first port of call at 2pm before the second leg!

Tayyabs is ace. Bring your own booze as well.

Indonesian is not bad , good for eating with hands , however as there are so many ethnic groups and islands might be hard to pin down one specific.

Nasi Padang can give one a good stab at trying some Indonesian dishes that go with rice.

Burmese , can be a mix due to colonial days and some Indian influences with biryani etc , however they got a lot of sour n salty , and they have this fermented spicy fish paste that they like to eat on rice, when we were in Yangon gave it a try , like to pride myself on having a try and asked for it , fair play to waiter he say I think you wont like so he brought a sampler out for our table to try , he wasnt wrong was a tough eat.

I absolutely love SE Asia and a large reason for that is the food. Indonesia is an absolutely huge country, and I suspect the food will change from region to region, island to island. Theres a large nod to the dutch who colonised it and a dish called Rijsttafel. It's basically a large pyramid/cone of rice in the centre of a huge platter with individual dishes around the side of all sorts of things. I suppose its similar in style to tapas but on a much bigger scale.

Most people have heard of nasi goreng (which is basically just fried rice), or you get fried noodles (mee goreng). Rendang and Satay are staples, I love Rendang, it's probably my favourite South East Asian dish, but there is a lot of crossover with Malaysia, both seem to want to claim it as being theres, but what you'll find in are large numbers of migration that have fused cooking. It's typically beef slow cooked in a delicious sauce that is fruity, fierce (but short lived) heat and some can be quite coconutty.

I think around Java and the next few islands (Bali and Lombok) there is a big focus on sambals. Small dishes of spices, pickles, chilis, that are compliments to your main which add tonnes of flavour and heat to fairly basic dishes of rice or noodles.

I also had some form of marlin stir fry. That was in ubud, bali. It was packed with chunky flakes of marlin and cooked in a chili sauce with tonnes of green chili. There was hardly anyone in this small place (can't recall it's name) and when I saw Marlin, i had to have it (i love marlin, used to be able to get it at Borough market, but now its like getting rocking horse...). The woman serving told me it was spicy so they could tone it down (clearly too many australians and brits visit!). I said I like spicy food. After a few looks that were basically "really, you think you like spice?" they agreed they'd cook it as it was intended. And blimey it had a kick, I wouldn't like to guess how many green chilis were in there, but it was absolutely delicious. I finished it all, green chilis too, and got a nod of respect as the cleaned plate was taken away.

If you venture to Netherlands (when possible), you'll find quite a few Indonesian restaurants, Utrecht had a really good one, plus you get belgian beer aplenty too! Whats not to like?

If you ever get to Jakarta can try this place out.

Natrabu Minang Restaurant Jl. H Agus Salim No. 29 A, Kebon Sirih, Menteng, RT.1/RW.1, Kb. Sirih, Kec. Menteng, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10340, Indonesia +62 21 31935668 https://g.co/kgs/9gRdK2

Went there when my GF was working in Jakarta for IBM.

Hands only but you get a little flag for your nationality sadly no Union Jacks so had to have Stars n Stripes.

Goat brain wat like apple , was OK , some of the spicier stuff was very spicy.

Having been out this way a long time now , the sharing style of eating I am much preferring it as it allows you far more options when eating out , problem is when your group is small.

On the subject of exotic foreign food, there's an award winning Malaysian takeaway in Bolton on Dearne on Furlong rd near the railway bridge. Their Sambal Ayam blows your socks off, and the Mee Goreng is fantastic. I try to get there on matchdays if I can.
