Because like countless others she merely states the obvious, spends her time haranguing Governments and businesses with little likelihood of changing things as she has no real power of her own to make crucial decisions. We have had enough information to be painfully aware the way things are headed without GT constantly frowning and ranting in front of the media.

My main gripe though is that she has no realistic, timely and workable solutions to offer. Anyone without power to change stuff can hide behind that fact and criticise people in power from the sidelines. Ranting and raging, particularly from a teenager merely antagonises people who can make decisions and solves nothing and in fact is often counter productive.

I don't dislike her and her message is on point, but it is how she conducts herself I dislike.

Really? You cannot beat nature. That is the arrogance of man who thinks he can and science has the answer to everything.

Life in general is infinately better for most now than.it was 200 years ago, never mind 2000. Population is only rising because it can do and as populations get relatively richer, population increase slows and will eventually plateau. Meanwhile technology, knowledge and understanding moves on. The best thing for the planet would be for the rich to be a little less richer and the poor to be a lot less poorer. And every family to have no more than 2 children.

Life for people is infinitely better than it was 200 years ago.

How is life for the planet and the nature upon it compared to 200 years ago?

I do agree nature will beat us in the end, just like it created us; we are a creation of the cosmos. My bet is a celestial collision will do us in.

I was born in 1956 and I greatly admire what she has done to highlight the problems facing us. I just wish a-holes like Johnson had a fraction of her maturity.

Irrespective, they won’t be immune from the effects of global warming. So, it is also in their interests to take the appropriate action.

I see that Tory led UK spending to combat climate change is already lagging behind where it should be. Same old same old - talks the talk but doesn't deliver.

“It refers to this collective inertia that leads us to think that our small actions cannot change anything. But I believe that every small act can contribute to a big change. Many small changes can bring back social attitudes that manipulate the global inertia and turn it into something more positive.”

We’ve had enough of experts. :)

My favourite phrase ‘the democratisation of knowledge’, 20 years ago, if you wanted to learn about complex subjects, you had to read actual published and peer reviewed texts.

Nowadays, you can go to a website and read a bunch of utter nonsense, and if it fits your agenda, it’s ‘evidence’. It doesn’t matter who wrote it, or how ‘wrong’ it is, the internet is jam packed full of ‘information’ and the fact that a huge amount of it is nonsense doesn’t mean people don’t believe it.

I would say for rats and himalayan balsom, better; for polar bears and giant red woods, worse.

You don't need to look too far to see that the number of species in decline is alarming, and many of them monitored over just the last 30 years or so. That many species are being displaced. That mountain tree lines are changing and some habitats will vanish in the next 50 to 100 years and all their species with it.

Look at the huge devastation the pine beetle is having in Canada in particular because the temperature doesn't drop enough to kill them off.

Imagine a world without pollinators. We're getting there fast.

Of course there will be some things that benefit from a hotter more volatile climate. I'm not sure that gets close to making up for the billions, probably trillions of animals, birds and insects we've unwittingly murdered by our out of control greed and hubris, in the name of betterment and science.

I agree except it's not a minor point. As part of a concerted drive we should be reducing packaging and where possible eliminating the use of non-recyclable materials.

Not scientific enough. We need a personal machine, depleting more natural resource in their manufacture, taking up the space of nature and consuming yet more energy just to operate. Trees, pah. They've had their time, terribly outdated and old fashioned!

She has raised awareness of the issues, that's undeniable. And you can't criticise her for not having a fully worked out solution to combat climate change; that's like saying I'm not entitled to say a Barnsley player is crap unless I've sourced a replacement and negotiated a provisional transfer fee and contract.

And why the reference to "particularly from a teenager"? It smacks a bit of "respect your elders" know your place type nonsense

Trees are great, I love trees, my favourite hobby depends on trees. But, they are too slow at absorbing CO2; we need science and machines to convert it quicker, create jobs, and bring people out of poverty.
