We no longer film the game ourselves with our own camera, for an alternative angle. That used to account for 10 minutes of the Recap itself. But even if we had the alternative angle this season, the recap was getting stripped back regardless. We introduced this concept four years ago, and the original episodes of the Recap were about four minutes in length. Over time, we made them a bit longer, then in 2018/19 we added the alternative angle so again they became longer, and so on. There were some that were touching 20 minutes last season. And whilst that might be great for those who like the videos, it meant for an eight-hour shift on the Sunday (or whatever day followed the match) when in truth, that should be the one day we have officially 'off' so to speak. So in essence, it meant giving up an entire Sunday (or whichever day) to make them. And last season, we even did a musical and non-musical version. That was some slog. So the decision was taken to this season strip them back to the original format, so now they're between three and five minutes in length again. When the Matchday Recap began, it wasn't a thing. But if you have a look, giants like Liverpool and Man Utd produce very similar videos now, with even the likes of Forest Green and Harrogate Town producing their own versions. Who knows what the future looks like, we're always looking for new ideas etc. We were also the first club to introduce a club podcast a few years ago too, and now that's become a normal thing across the industry. We're always trying to find the next idea.
I prefer the 5 mins versions, I always found myself skipping through certain bits when they were 15 mins long, which did make me feel bad cos I know you put a boatload of effort into producing them.
that’s trouble with modern world ,people can’t just do one thing, watch telly whilst looking at phone etc,but skipping through a recap, all that exercise would wear me out
I always enjoy the matchday recaps. I really appreciated the lengthier ones during COVID but now we're back in the ground again the shorter ones do the business as we can see more for ourselves.
