With our competition paying i presume big wages for Deeney, Hourihane, Drinkwater should we be doing the same?
Not when there is always a chance that at least one big spender is only one poor signing away from being the next Wigan / Bolton / Wendies.
no. people also seem to think players have to be old to be classed as experienced. I would rather us stick to the model we are operating in and sign players who are young but with plenty of games played, even if that is not in this league. For example that Joe Bell we are linked with, he is young with massive sell on potential but has played well over 100 games for various clubs and his national side including games in the Olympics etc. I would much rather have him signed full time, rather than a season loan for a Drinkwater or even a Hourihane.
Not sure they’re paying particularly big money for those players. The loans will be heavily subsidised by the parent clubs and Deeney has taken a pay cut apparently
Just one ? Big wages short term to sit centre of defence or centre midfield to keep the young lads in order. A centre forward to hold and keep the ball, we have plenty of young legs around them to do the running?
I'm very happy with the way the Board is operating currently. It's never going to be a quick fix with us. Patience is needed. Paying big money, never really works long term as we've seen from other Clubs in the past. Big Bucks for quick success is not our model and I'm happy with that to be honest.
This with bells on. Alex Mowatt, Conor Hourihane, Brad Potts and Ethan Pinnock were all under 24 when we signed them, and had all made over 100 appearances in their senior career. Pinnock and Potts had made almost 200 (albeit a lot in non-league football in Pinnock's case), and Mowatt had played over 100 at Championship level. Finding that type of player might be difficult on deadline day, but a Matty James type of loan wouldn't go a miss.
Middle ground for me. Of course we don’t want to chase over the hill expensive vanity signings but having lost the experience of both Solbauer and Mowatt think we need to look at players who can replace that experience if possible. Either through a subsidised loan or through the European market. . Agreed as others had mentioned experience can also come from players like MK 1 Hourihane or Winnall who played a good number of games at a decent standard. I’d say the primary driver has to be 2 players who can impact the first team. We don’t need a tomorrow signing this time we need a today one.
Spot on. I'd love it if we could get ourselves a midfield equivalent of Solbauer. Someone who could just put a foot on the ball and steady things down a bit. I know it's early days, but it feels to me like we're a bit too wasteful in midfield, too many clever flicks and stuff that doesn't quite come off.
Just reading that and had a thought... Do players have a finite number of games they can play before their bodies start to breakdown? Obviously physiology differs between individuals, and there is an element of luck, but could a player than has played 200 games by the age of 24 have less left in their career than a player that has played 40 competitive games?
Just look at Kenny Dougall. When we signed him, he’d lots of experience elsewhere. And in L1, he was stand-out straight away. The right player doesn’t always need UK experience if he’s good enough….. Dike, although raw, was another example.
