I thought one of the reasons we needed another left-back was because Ben Williams looked far from convincing since his return.
I thought it was more to do with many waiting Styles to be just a CM? Think Williams has played well, and played poorly, to date, where as Styles has only really played well at LWB.
The OP started the thread referring to £1,250,000 paid for Kane. My reply was in regards to that. As in, it's never been disclosed how much he cost, by either club. The OP then said something about the head coach and misquotes. All very confusing.
I genuinely feel that this has been a fantastic summer transfer window. No sales, kept all our top players that we could. Benson and Gomez are a step above what we have signed previously, keeping Styles Helik Anderson Collins Woodrow Brittain is brilliant from our board. Oulare and Iseka could be top quality. I couldnt be more excited, this season we will watch our lads play some outstanding football.
I’d say our best team is top 10 but our squad is bottom 10 but after the ups and downs of recent years. Mid table is more than enough.
I think Gomes could be a fantastic addition to the squad, but it's another addition where there's a risk that 'potential' doesn't deliver at Championship level (e.g. Ugbo). The areas of concern are that we've not addressed the experience issue which the Head Coach referenced and we've obviously failed to land our first choice targets to have been forced into a loan market that the owners have stated isn't something they like doing. We've also missed out on signing a left back through either loan or permanent signing. The timing of loaning out Kane was weird, with clearly no guarantee that a replacement was incoming at the time. Miller going out on loan was an obvious move so could have happened at any stage. Looking at the overall window, it's been a bit of a bugger's muddle with the visa issues effectively turning two pre-season signings into two deadline day additions. Cole looks to have been a pre-Schopp signing that he doesn't particularly trust in the line-up. Benson, on the other hand, looks very promising. It's almost gone un-noticed that all of our own headline target players have remained with the club, pretty much without any strong interest in them being evident. That, in itself, is unusual and needs to be factored into the overall picture. In summary, not great and there's still a lot of questions to be answered about the quality of new recruits, but perhaps one where its "success" will ultimately be seen in who didn't leave rather than who came in.
From what I've read about Gomes, he's more of a defensive midfielder, designed to break up play. I think when he finally gets going, Kane is more box to box, similar to Benson. So I don't think it's a like for like transfer necessarily. If anything, Gomes is the first player we've had play that particular role since, maybe Kenny Dougall.
We have already done this, Thomas went to Ipswich last season & player values & prices have gone up over the years therefore you cannot make a comparison with yesteryear
Thanks for posting this. I thought I was going a bit crazy with all the moaning when we’ve literally sold nobody of worth all summer and have brought a number of players in. I have no idea what people were expecting but as far as I can see this is about the best we could’ve hoped for.
no he did say that. Doesn't seem to have got his way with that one BUT most of our current team have had at least a season playing in the Championship now.
I went to bed Andy. I've replied regarding the head coach being potentially misquoted as having said he would like some experience added to the squad. Regarding Kane's price tag, I guess it's probably fair to say that if the club insists on secrecy then people are likely to believe whatever they want.
That's true Helen. And to be fair, I've only seen the Bolton and Luton games so perhaps there was a marked improvement in the QPR and Birmingham encounters. Perhaps we are well equipped as we need to be. Only time will tell.
Aside from the fact this lad has played minutes for the current prem winners as well as training with Pep alongside some of the best CDMs in the country in Rodri and Fernandinho. I would say that is some good experience at a pretty substantial level.
