Doug O'Kane mentioned in a tweet last night that we could always sign a free agent to bolster the squad. I've had a look some ofthe players out of contract and I think Robbie Brady could be the pick of the bunch. He's only 29, plays as a winger or a left back (LWB anyone?) and is obviously still unattached. 19 games in the prem last season and a quality player on his day. Sign him up I say!
I always think there's a reason players end up free agents, it's either age, wages or they're garbage. I'd rather stick with what we have and reassess in January if needed.
I think that's often the case. You look down the list and see Wilshere, Sturridge, Carroll etc and think you wouldn't couch any of them. But Brady has always come across as a real professional. There's bound to be a few gems tucked away for someone to sign up. Remember Hammill?
I notice the answers to all our problems last year, Yaya Sanogo and Wilfred Bony are still on there l.
Thought Carroll had signed for someone (Reading?) Id have either Wilshire or Sturridge if they would agree to fit to our wage structure and have their pay heavily linked to fitness. Both have a rather poor record for being unfit to play but if they would take a lowish basic salary with a larger bonus for every game they play then Id be interested. They arent going to get the salaries they used to though so its all down to how much they want to play. Could be a Vas Te type of signing
Just heard on Talksport that Carroll didn't go through and now Reading can't sign free agents outside of the window so they're stuck with what they've got unless they have less than 14 available players.
They must all look at their online banking every morning and think "ah well, I'll stay in bed a bit longer." Tough isn't it.
Wilshere or Sturridge are internationals with massive profiles. The idea that they would come to Barnsley on a pay as you play deal is laughable - and even if they did, we couldn’t afford to play them. The reason Matty James left (who isn’t nearly as high profile) was because he was on a pay-if-you-win deal, and our upturn in form made him too expensive!
Some years back I was watching the north london derby while away in Milan. It was most amusing that so many players names were being pronounced as if Italian. Wilshear.... i ... was my personal favourite. Gareth Barli.... just didn't have a ring to it
Depends if they have any other options - if they are out of contract that means no money coming in, no one is going to give them 50K or even 20K per week now so if their choice is no work or play football for a mere 5k per week + a 5K per match bonus for example they might be up for it. They may well get a better deal at another club but the longer they are out of work the harder that becomes I am fairly sure Matty James took a hefty wage cut to go to Birmingham (as for your rubbish about James contract - he was under contract to Leicester so was getting his full wages of which we paid part - the reason he left was VI would rather spend that on Dike and promote Palmer etc)
