I don't think anyone on here is clamouring for them. This mess goes back to before we got locked down originally. If we had shut our borders down before March 2020 when we knew the world was in danger and did a few weeks maybe a month of the original lockdown restrictions possibly with things we didn't need to do then like wear a mask, then by April 2020 we should have (while keeping the borders still shut apart from essential like food n medicine being brought here) been able to live like New Zealand did for most of last year until we got our vaccines here and was able to then open our borders again with testing.

Figures for comparison.- just for interest

Jan 13th Cases 38,000 People in Hospital 37,000

Sept 7th Cases 37,000 People in Hospital 8,000

First is winter, no vacine and at the start of the winter lockdown.

Second is summer, significant vacination and lifting of most regulations on July 19th.

Hospital beds in UK for general and acute patients are approx 100k.

Currently 71% of the UK population is vaccinated (64% double dosed). That is a lot, but is nowhere near "almost all". For comparison, Spain is 79% (73% both doses), Portugal 86% (78%) and Italy 72% (65%). Unless we can get the remaining nearly 30% vaccinated it will just continue to be a problem.

Some potential good news I read the other day was of an alternative vaccine - more based on a "traditional" model of deactivated virus particles rather than mRNA spike protein - might be approaching trial, which might (or might not) help to improve the situation.

I think another problem since the isolation rules changed has been people supressing symptoms and saying, "It's just a cough. I've had both jabs".
