I believe the bridge deck is about 5m wide with the steps being even wider - it’s a big bridge! The Pontefract road side also has an extra set of steps to accommodate for the height difference between the interchange side. The bridge hasn’t moved it ‘lands’ in what is currently green space and a few parking bays in Market Gate Car Park. The wall and fence running along that boundary will be removed and, although the CGI doesn’t show it, silver bollards will run alongside the pavement edge so it won’t just be open to the road. There are also plans to add a proper crossing to the other side of Pontefract Road.
The arcade was probably a huge investment back in the day too . I don't know it's history but would be interested if anyone does.
That's exactly what's needed. Or something like the Roxy's at Leeds. Crazy golf, bowling, table tennis, pool etc. All while having a beer. Half of our office would be in there numerous times a week!
Primark wanted to take over the TK Maxx store and become 2 storey in the Alhambra. Just like the original Co-op dept store. The owners of the Alhambra are letting TK Maxx keep it for storage, which seems a commercial error. A 2 storey Primark, would be an asset to the Alhambra and the town. I agree there needs to be demolition of parts of the town centre retail area but that would require compulsory purchases. As the council has had its budget cut by 60%, since 2010,sadly I don't think that will be happening. Town and city centres need to change, to more residential less shopping and more eating and leisure. Barnsley Council is ahead of many metropolitan areas in the UK, in trying to make this happen.
The council need to start marketing the in surrounding areas, as they have very poor shopping areas. Namely,Wakefield, Pontefract, Castleford, Hemsworth, Dewsbury. Before Covid-19, there used to be coach trips to the town from North and East Yorkshire for the market. It's a great opportunity, I hope they don't miss it, Christmas is coming soon too.
I’d heard about Primark so fingers crossed it ends up happening - I wonder if the storage arrangement is only temporary? I can’t see why TK Maxx would want to pay rent on a large shopping unit just for storage.
Currently in the town centre now. This isn't some benefits Britain forgotten town run down by the Tories. We live in a 21st century bustling area that's going places. The multi story is a huge improvement on the old one that feels much more safe and secure, inside the glassworks itself is something I'd expect to see in a trendy city and the new public square looks beautiful. Well what I can see of it under the crowd of people enjoying themselves
I don’t recognise where anything is on the pics! Can anyone explain using old references (around 15 or more years ish) please. I don’t even know where the Glassworks is!
The first photo in my post is looking towards where Dazzles used to be (roughly below where the glassworks sign is) so TK MAxx would be in the old outdoor market. The second one is taken from outside the alhambra, if you look carefully you can see the old BHS building halfway down on the left with the new look sign on it. On the right is where wh Smith's and game used to be. The third photo is taken from the entrance to the old outside market looking towards the block of shops that had radio rentals on the left and superdrug on the right. Which is now falco lounge and the library. The very left of the photo is where Dazzles and Gregg's were. In the tweet the main photo of the first tweet you can just about see the bus station in the back left corner and behind the hoarding is the railway crossing.
And this one is taken from the bus station looking towards cheapside, you can just about see the BHS building in the very background
I think you’re confusing Claire’s with Dazzles, SuperTyke. Claire’s has only ever been in the Alhambra.
