When we appointed Ismael, we were crap.
He brought in a style that wasn’t great but it worked. We finished fifth and granted, Swansea were better than us and Brentford deserved to go up.

Instead of bringing someone in with a similar style after our best season since 2000, we bring in an Austrian ball keeper who I’m sure would work with his style after signing quality players but not sure it would work with our ‘moneyball’ system. It was always going to take a while for tactics to set in and I’m not saying Schopp isn’t good enough but surely the common sense appointment was something similar to build on from last season?

Just me but changing a style that finished fifth last season to what’s happening this year seems to be ludicrous, I do hope we change it around but Ismael found a system that worked and now we’ve changed it.

    Ahh well.

Who plays Val's style though? I'm not sure they could easily find a replacement?

I appreciate the style pound for pound may be hard but someone who goes direct would suit Val’s style rather than 100 passes before not getting a shot on target and conceding two minutes later.

Plenty of other managers play direct McCarthy, warnock, the Luton manager. Schopp just seems to want us to play football in our own half.

Certainly do! Same Cardiff, Luton and Boro who finished top half last season! Unreal

Would be interesting to see what data points led to Schopp being approached. We were never going to get a coach that was as good as Ismael at setting a team up to press high, so maybe needed a change in style.

But some on here complained the direct style was hard to watch not half as hard as watching the 7 games and 1 win ive seen so far.

Nothing to do with style. It's about man management.

Some numpties on here who would rather see us finish 21st and pass teams to death. I’d love to and one day hopefully I see that again but that won’t happen whilst we have strikers who can’t score 25 goals in a season. With all respect to Woodrow, he grafts and scores but wouldn’t score 25 playing for us.

This ******** of us needing to play nice football is hilarious. Ask a proper football fan. Would you rather play **** football and win or play nice football and lose?

This style doesn’t work with Barnsley Football Club at this level.

Manager don't look good for me. Recruitment not good enough. Our signings we don't know yet. They have a good record tbf apart from cole.

I'm with you we should have just gone down the route of the direct style manager and recruited players accordingly. I like the passing football from the back it works well for man city.... we're not man city play to your strengths. I don't think we will end up making a profit on schopp.

Not sure that style of playing football in there half and pressing is always going to be hard to play against. Schopps of playing tippy tappy in our own half is easy to play against there was no press today no fight just awful val wouldn't have had that today.
Would you stick or twist for val now given the chance? I know what I'd do.

The season has started poorly, however I dont think we can draw any conclusions re the manager or system until we have close to our best 11 on the pitch, with some options on the bench. We got lucky last season with barely any injuries.

    Just to reiterate........
those of us who found the football hard to watch at times last season were NOT calling for us to play tippy tappy football at the back instead. There are more than two ways of playing football.
