Was fortunate to get complimentary tickets. Not a band I’d usually bother with, and when they cane on stage I wondered what I’d let myself in for. Deary me. I know Terry Hall is famed for not looking bothered but this was another level of can’t-be-arsed-ness. I did enjoy the music, but I’m now worried about Terry Hall!! He looks in a bad way. Spent much of the gig with his back to the audience, arranging his drinks, vapes, and whatever else he was messing with. Still, it was a decent night.
He's been like that since 1979. I saw him smile briefly at a gig in, I think, 2013...sardonically of course.
Terry Hall has had a hell of a life. Abducted by a paedophile ring aged 12, drug and alcohol abuse, divorce, suicide attempted and living with bipolar disorder. If you read up on his past he has spent decades coming to terms with and trying to overcome the abduction. And the awkward stage presence has always been there, likely due to being bipolar, which explains being fidgety/distracted/head down etc. Cracking singer though.
There are a couple of iterations of the Specials about, seen the Neville Staples version (and chatted to him and his Wife) a couple of times. I've noticed "The Neville Staples Band" (so i'm thinking legal dispute - I know they all had a fallout with Jerry Dammers) is at the Picturedrome soon. He is a great stage presence and a genuinely nice bloke. Feel sad for Terry Hall, deserves credit for rising from such a background but sounds like it's caught up to him
Terry Hall in The Colourfield, Virgins and Phillestines is one of my favourite albums ever. Really worth a listen. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCTyAkCjyuxwrZeE9SDyA8of-hSrKZwtb
Terry was in the studio, same time as us, 20 years back. He knew Kusworth from the Brum/Cov scene. A very nice, very shy & humble lad. The only thing wrong with Terry is, he didn’t make the most of his great talent. I know, join the ****ing club..
If Terry understood just how talented he is, we’d be talking about him in the same breath as Robert Smith & Morrissey.? Oh look, I just did..
Been to see the Specials tonight doing a small record store out store for the new protest songs album. what a gig! Terry was on fantastic form, funny, engaging and a brilliant frontman. The protest songs album is a corker by the way too
I'd also recommend Terry Hall's collaboration album with Mushtaq - "The Hour of Two Lights". "...a fantastic mélange of East and West, traditional and modernmusic."
New album is dirt cheap at moment. CD just £5 at Amazon & hmv. LP £15 An interesting listen. Don't buy it expecting anything remotely ska-like.
