I still don't get it. How does stewards stood at phase five save lives? Not taking the piss just don't know. If there was a fire risk most people would calmly or not calmly leave the stadium as quickly and as safely as possible without taking notice of phase five position.

Some really good points. There were a few green shoots today. It was a poor game but we saw improved performances from people like Oduor and Vic.

Well for a start they open the fire exits and big exit gates. That makes it easier to evacuate.

They basically move to positions where they can guide people without blocking any of the gangways, open up all the exits and generally get in place to get us out as quickly as possible.

My bigger question is what is phase 4?

The grass on the pitch thing was from the subs warming up, they ripped it up a bit so it got raked off.

The scoreboard needs ripping down and replacing with a fit for purpose one.

And I've always thought that instead of penning the fans as close as possible to the tunnel they should spread them across the back of the stand and cordon off the front section. Less noise and further from the pitch so less chance of an invasion

As a chartered H&S practitioner and a qualified FSO I have studied the major disasters at football stadia, Bradford, Ibrox, River Plate, Heysel, Estádio Nacional Peru, Hillsborough and others. In a phase 5 all stadium gates and exits must be open and stewards in place in less than 2 minutes. In my time, BFC had it down to 1.5 minutes. Google football disasters and check how many deaths occurred because gates weren’t open. In a major incident people do not behave calmly they panic and crushing occurs. By your admission you said you didn’t know what phase 5 position meant and in the next breath you say people would leave calmly without taking notice on phase 5. What would happen when those calm people got to closed gates and there were a thousand calm people behind them who don’t know the gates aren’t open.

But say the stadium has to be emptied quickly because of an emergency what would those stewards stood at the front of all the gangways be doing as they are not by any gate or fire exit to open?

    Thank you for your reply.
