The Tories have always been massive advocates of the coal industry, so this is hardly surprising...

I’m curious to know who they will use to staff the new mine. I suspect we may have a bit of a skills gap. Better call in the Poles.

Also, I was genuinely surprised to hear that we still have a steel industry.

The planning application was approved on three separate occasions. I was at the meeting to hear the third application in October. I was there principally as an opponent. But having heard the case I left the meeting thinking maybe I’d got it wrong .

If as a nation we only look at carbon emissions as it affects the UK then fine, this application should have been turned down. If you look at the impact on world wide carbon emissions of refusing the application, then the case to approve it was a strong one. If you still think that the coking coal should have stayed in the ground, then you need to accept either, the coke would have to be imported or, we shouldn’t have a steel industry and everything we buy/build that is made of steel is itself imported; with all the carbon emissions that involves.

Decisions like these are usually not as black and white as painted. This is one of them.

One of my first jobs on leaving school was working at the EAI at Grimethorpe power station on the Fluidised Bed combustion project (clean coal technology). It was a real education to be working alongside some brilliant German US & UK engineers and technicians. This project was leading the world in the science at the time but was swept away, along with the Coal industry, by the wicked witch of the west. If you believe that ‘clean coal’ will be part of the world’s energy needs then that decision was very short sighted.
I played 5 a side football with those Engineers on Thursday night at Willlogarth school and although not wanting to use lazy stereotypes, the Germans were fiercely competitive and very good, the Yanks were ***** and didn’t believe they were playing a ‘proper sport’ and I was (obviously) brilliant- modelling myself on King Ronnie.

Cumbria CC have now said they will reconsider the application. I’m sceptical that councillors will have changed their tune but let’s see.

I can't see why people are up in arms. Would they rather what's left of our steel industry go down the pan too?

In 2015 I worked at Scunthorpe steel works and was out cycling one evening near the river Trent. I turned a corner and was confronted by loads of posters campaigning against "unsightly" wind farms. I looked at my cycling app on my phone which told me that I was currently cycling at an altitude of -15 feet (15 feet below sea level) the very definition of turkeys voting for Christmas.

What’s the connection Stephen? Do you think the mine will sell the coal cheaper to their mates down the road? No.
The price of coal needs to go up to stimulate search for alternatives. The production of CO2 has to go down or we are screwed.

It's down to the garden revolution in the 1600's. Land was reclaimed from the sea. Doncaster should really be a coastal town.

That's why it should have remained nationalised.

Well you’ll get no argument from me. However as it is 85% of output will be exported.

What a douche. Most of us want to do our bit for the planet, but blocking roads isn't the way to get the public onside.

I'm all for protest but that demo was just downright dangerous.
Sorry, how thick does he sound, surely they could find a better spokesman?

I know absolutely nothing about Steel production, is there a viable way to produce that is more environmentally friendly?

Dint really get to hear him for interviewers asking him a question and then shouting over him. Don`t know if he is much cop or not, but Richard and the woman interviewing came over as attack dogs.

Now I remember why I don`t watch morning telly. It`s shiite.

I don't watch gmtv either, but from that clip he fell into the trap, how on earth can you have a campaign called insulate and then fail to do it to your own house?
