Turned it off watching boxing, see Yanks are struggling with the wind a bit and complaining about. Just praying for a miracle now.
We need 3 points from these fourballs; 10-6 is just about manageable. Anything worse and it's probably game shot.
I love the Ryder Cup, but I hate what its become. First one i remember watching was 1991 and then '93. Both close losses but I never recalled the vociferous booing and screaming we get now. Anyone booing the other team should be booted out. Anyone screaming 'get in the hole' should just be booted. Sadly i feel this will be over by the 3rd or 4th match on singles Sunday. Rahm aside this is the weakest European team i can remember. Made worse by under performing players like McIroy. Harrington strikes me as a Faldo type leader - he can't gee up his players like McGinley did or Monty.
in fact i recall 90s Ryder cups as quite sedate affairs with captains like Seve roaming around on their buggies. Without hoards of crowds shouting and jingoistic chants. I fear Europe's recent dominance is done US indifference to the event is over. I honestly feel US teams didn't give a damn when they were getting hammered by Woosnam and Langer's teams. But their strength is unbelievable. Other than Rahm i fail to see anyone else from Europe getting into their team. Hovland and Lowry would have a wild card shot. McIlroy would not.
The popularity of the Ryder Cup has increased ten fold though. It’s not that it was sedate back then, but that it’s a massive tournament right now. Tickets for 2023 in Italy sold out before a tee shot was taken (I nearly bought two, logged out to think about it, and then couldn’t get back online). The US Team have always cared. They hate losing. But what you had then was egos and Hollywood type players who wanted all the attention and got all the attention. The team spirit was non existent and they thought they were far superior and it was an easy day’s work. I’ve mentioned it in this thread but this is the most likeable US team in my lifetime. Supremely talented, down to earth and genuine, respectful, and desperate to win. Players like Finau, English, Morikawa (and others) playing for a brilliant captain in Stricker, on his home course, with no European fans in attendance. Was always a tall order this year. If European fans had been allowed to travel you wouldn’t have heard as much from the US fans. As it is that’s the only noise we can hear
Not sure I’m going to bother watching today If it wasn’t for Rahm who has got 70% of our points it would be over already. I recon I could beat Rory today he has been that poor. I can’t see us winning more than 3 or 4 points today. and we need 9
Agree about the likability factor of the US. People like Patrick Reed were very divisive. and going back a few years Mikelson and Leonard were not popular.
I still think it is one of the best global sporting events watched and enjoyed by millions. There will always be the odd idiot shouting “ in the water “ and jeering in un-sportsmanlike ways. Assuming Europe lose today, it will be 11-10 to us since team Europe took over from GB. Pretty close eh ?
Harrington has no choice to put his big guns our early but who after Rahm is a big gun? Rahm has to go out first. But Stricker will counter that by putting DJ on him. It's gotta be Rahm, Lowry, Hovland and i hate to say it but McIlroy. If - and it's a big if - Europe can win the first three then you never know. I would say stranger things have happened but in Ryder cup they have not. In Medina didnt Europe win the last two points of the Saturday too so in effect they were 10-4 down?
It was 10-6 in 2012, and once we hit the 14 point point total, Woods pretty much handed Moli the half point. 2012 is the odd one out in terms of results. Brookline was a comeback on US soil. We destroyed the US in Detroit, probably to date Europe's greatest victory.
Yep he is, he's done it a few times. Think Harrington is just trying to recreate previous victories. Though on paper the Yanks should almost almost win the singles l, we have an amazing record.
I'm sure in Medina on the Saturday afternoon it was 10-4 during the final foursomes. The come back engineered by Poulter started then and it was 10-6 heading into the Singles.
Sorry read your post incorrectly, yep it was 10-4 before the Poulter and McIlroy show. Will do like I did in 2012 not watch it. Went to pick up my parents from the airport, checked my phone at Manchester Airport and was blown away. Parents took an age to get through baggage reclaim, managed to listen to final moments in the car. Softened the blow of the high parking charge.
This has been the poorest European performance, I can remember. Poor captaincy from Harrington, poorer selection, ie Mcilroy,Poulter,Westwood to name but 3. Majority of the US team are in the top20, Europe outside this. Poor preparation, the US team have spent a lot of time at this course. It will be good for the European team to take a thrashing, as it will allow them to move forward and be less UK centred and talking of past tournaments. Golf is evolving but some of the European team is from the past. The US team are deserved winners and have played the better golf.
