Suggestions of using the army to deliver fuel to petrol stations

I know I'm a bit thick but wouldn't it take a while to train them how to safely fill up the petrol station with the tanker anyway? I've no doubt an army trained HGV driver could drive the fuel from the refinery to the forecourt but I imagine that most people wouldn't have a clue how to get it out of said lorry and into the ground.

Also the government saying the army is always on stand by to do this but it isn't needed yet is just rubbish and them refusing to acknowledge that brexit has caused a problem. The immediate problem may be caused by panic buying but it still exists and there are many businesses out there really struggling to get fuel to do their jobs. Quite what that situation needs to be for the racist scum to admit he's got a problem I'll never know.

 

There has been some comment training and planning would take 3-4 weeks and for it to implemented. If it’s still bad then… we’ll need more than a few lorry drivers.

 

Bring back the seventies and the Green Goddesses, which fell over if you turned too quickly with a full load.

They're talking about replacing medical staff in NYC with the National Guard, most I'm sure, who do not have medical training.

Agree with you fully mate, but Coco hasn't worked it out yet.

 

I'm not an expert but I think quite a few probably will have those... as Forces drivers are passed to carry explosives under ADR...although not necessarily the liquid 'tanks' section that refers to petrol. It is though a short online course to get it sorted.

This was initially a non news story a week ago but the thickos have caused this to get out of control.

 

Surely using some of the massive profits made by supermarkets to up their wages would entice more lorry drivers to work for them

 

The difference is that they can rotate to fill the gaps due to freedom of movement which is why, so far, they don't have shortages.

It's not just Brexit, but Brexit is clearly part of the problem.

 

Most of the drivers in the army get it

 

Many have got the ADR/ hazmat qual, they wont use lads for example from a infantry regiment who have got a C+E they will use the Royal Logistic Course or part of it that used to be the Royal Corp of Transport that are qualified up to the ying yang

 

I would think that the RAF have drivers who do it on their air bases.

 

The Army have plenty of trained Tanker driver's, with ADR licences; trust me...Ive worked at the Defence School of Transport for the past 25 years

 

There is a shortage of drivers throughout Europe but whats to stop the UK recruiting drivers from other parts of the world ? I know i am lacking in the old grey matter but surely that is an option , this is not a political response just me trying to apply common sense .

If they have full ADR they will have tankers all ready. Most with ADR who don’t drive tankers don’t have it.
When you take the ADR it is one extra day for tankers and one extra test. It’s all classroom based so 8n theory they would only have to do one day.
Having said that I don’t know if you can just do one day after having passed, you would think so….

 

Another triumph for the lockdown. Who could have foreseen that 15 months of closing driver training centres and cancelling tests would have led to problems?

 

That’s pretty much what caused the fuel issue.
Homer’s deliver fuel for BP & Texaco on a subcontract basis and they are short staffed due to people leaving for increased offers from elsewhere.
This left them short staffed, which led to BP advising smaller outlets they would have less delivers, which then exploded to where we are now.
