I was responding to Brush"s comments about it preventing tourists from coming into the U.K, when have tourists been allowed to come in with out a passport ?, I am not on about drivers, workers etc crossing borders , the post is about tourists .

Entry requirements are no different for workers or tourists from the EU (or; they weren’t prior to Brexit)

 

This does not cover tourism which is the point of the original op

 

Tourists from the EU were allowed to enter the OK without a passport (using a national ID card) when we were in the EU. I know this is true because my wife did it all the time, for almost 20 years, in both directions.

 

Sorry but you’re making stuff up. Nowhere on that page is there a difference between tourists and other visitors.

Read it again; the point of the OP is an announcement of a change by Priti Patel.

It ought to be obvious that a ‘change’ means that something different is happening. So your assertion that it couldn’t happen before is clearly incorrect.

You seem to be under the impression that if you type FACT it means you’re right, and that if we tell you what we’ve seen happen, or if we actually link to the government website with the rules, we’re still wrong - maybe we should just type FACT instead?

England's not a nation sparra. No such thing as an English passport.

You can literally walk over the border to England and back again as much as you like.

Btw, my sister who lives in Spain gained entry to the UK and Spain multiple times on her Spanish ID card, no passport.

Anyone from Ireland can travel to the UK with a "Passport Card", which is an Irish Identity Card. They can also use a driving licence. I have.

 

You didn't with Aer Lingus - or Stobart but that was operating as an Aer Lingus flight. I couldn't fly Ryanair because we had to book it through the work portal and only certain airlines were allowed.

 

Correct

Ryanair are the only flight carrier to the Republic of Ireland that require a passport or passport card. They do not accept photo ID. You can even learn this when checking in for a flight. You are given two options for type of ID to be used: passport book and passport card.17 Dec 2016

Used the ferry before too where the driver is required to show their driver's licence but passengers have no obligation to show anything , they can travel ID free .

 

Yeah but that wasn’t a ‘legal’ requirement, that was just Ryanair keeping their world cheap and simple. Likewise we needed a passport for Ryanair to Amsterdam.

Note ‘for Ryanair’ not for the U.K. Border Agency or indeed their Dutch or Irish equivalent.

I remember back in 2016 after the vote to leave,saying to my wife that we needed to recruit at least 30,000 Customs,Immigration and Border control staff. I don't believe we did,nor build larger and new border posts in Kent,Hampshire and Northern Ireland. Even in November last year, Michael Gove was desperately trying to recruit Border control staff, for Kent. It's not like we haven't had years to prepare for leaving. France announced 800 customs staff for Dunkirk in 2018 in preparation for us leaving.
Still not sure I understand governments.

 

Just reminded me of trying to get onto a live RAF camp with my mates passport(picked up by mistake) years ago, got detained rather sharply.

 

We'll come to some agreement with France whereby we pay for these French customs staff to do our customs business.

 

I've written at length down the years of how much of a shambles the UK side of Brexit was. From appointing a cheap legal counsel over 6 months after negotiations started, to the constant lies all along the way, and only in the last week or so do we now learn that the brexit vote in 2016 was all about a high wage, high skill economy. News to me!

Its just a shambles. And we're heading for the mother of all bumps if dePfeffel actually does what he says (obviously, thats pretty unlikely, we know he lies and thats baked in). The bump will be the effect of trying to control rampant inflation. Interest rates.

I get the feeling this government think the population of the UK have saved a huge amount during the covid period. They are increasing taxes, prices are increasing, utilities are increasing, wages are increasing, labour rates are increasing (pushing prices higher). They are all pushing inflation and at some stage the BofE will have to step in. It's over 3% now. I wouldn't be surprised if it pushes up to 4.5% or more and very swiftly.

The sad reality is that there are significant numbers who can't afford significant price rises, and a good number who will have a very painful jolt when interest rates increase and start to bite in mortgage payments and CC debt. Small business owners in particular could face a massive hit given funding streams outside of institutional borrowing used to simply stay afloat.

Bump in the road? I think a far few car suspensions are in for ruin.
