No it's not me you cheeky sods!
A workmate told me today that he feels extremely lonely as he lives alone and doesn't really have friends (he says he does but I think he's lying). It's got to the point that he's noticeably hanging around after his shift finishes at work for up to 2 hours just so that he doesn't have to go home.

He's not the kind of guy to go and talk to a professional about his feelings or anything like that so I'm trying to think of some kind of hobby that he could take up or something like that where he would meet people. Preferably something that doesn't cost the earth.

    Any suggestions?

Offer to take him for a pint and ask what his interests are and take it from there?

Might be an idea to get to know any interests he may have. Does he like sports, he could join the Metrodome for eg, and enlist on classes.

Ive been out with him before, he's got a few interests but none of them seem to fit in with a casual hobby/meeting local people to spend time with doing said hobby

He's not the type sadly, he's got a very unique personality which doesn't help and his interests are quite specific and not easy to actually take part in round here or on a budget.

I'll have a word with him again tomorrow see if I can find anything he's into that he hasn't previously told me

Do not under any circumstances suggest going to Oakwell. You couldn’t be that cruel.

That's one of my no no's. I don't mate about with people who don't like Football, horse racing or Cricket. Unless they're decent family men who like trainspotting, photography, model railways and drinking.

Joking aside I find people who don't like football lack that spark. I can't put my finger on it. It's a massive ice breaker and something I can rattle on about for hours.

I think sports clubs are a good way to meet people. I know Barnsley athletics clubs welcome all abilities and often go for a drink after Park runs require volunteers too .

Just tell him "There's a bloke I know called Markus who's got even fewer mates than you"

Tell him to go and learn to dance. It's a great way to be keep healthy both physically and mentally. Dance lessons are totally immersive and therefore extremely mindful. In addition, there is a social aspect that goes alongside it as well as the educational. Plus he'll get to dance with members of the opposite sex and since dancing isn't consider a masculine thing to do in this country - wrongly in my eyes - he'll be in a minority and should get lots of dances.

If he's interested in or would like to have a bash at fly fishing, I'll be happy to meet up and show him the ropes.

Dancing isn't for everyone, I can't get past the fact that you're completely exposed and on show. I'm sure its amazing for a lot of people but for introverts like me it's incredibly difficult to relax into.

I'll pass that on as I know he does enjoy sea fishing which is a similar thing but not practical regularly
