It was close to coming crashing down that season. If we'd sold Winnall to Leeds in January we'd have lost our Head Coach and main striker.
Remember LJ persuadeing Alfie Mawson to come here when 8 other clubs wanted him.. Don't forget Mawson came on a free from Brentford (how things have changed) and sold him for 5 million..
If he were any good he’d be managing championship/premiership bare minimum. He spent a fortune at City and didn’t get them to the promised land.
Someone’s probably already said this but he had the best team (man for man) in lg1 that season bottom of the league. At most other clubs would’ve been sacked. Played our best striker (Winall) out of position. Look at where a lot of the players in that team ended up. I’d have got us up with that squad. Win percentages can’t be compared. Context is important. Before my time but got % to be compared favourably with hunters it would need to be much higher.
McGeady was on that sort of money, but his contract expired this summer and resigned a one year so doubt he would be on that much now.
This with bells on! Inherited a very very good squad of players for that division Experimented with formations that didnt suit (winnall on wing) hamill forced in and changed our formation and fortunes. He then got his move and again enjoyed good budget/s for the division he coached in and good players. He talked a very very good game but i think his sum was greater than his parts.....id have him over our present coach tomorow!!
Spot on re the Hunter/Clarke reality but just can’t bring myself to recall anything positive about Johnson.
The season we went down patrick cryne implemented signing under 25s and wanted to use "the spreadsheet" it was that responsible for signing conor, roberts, scowen,g.williams and winnall. Adam Davies was brought to the clubs attention by Mark crossley the then goalkeeper coach. Wilson wanted his own experience as he wasn't a fan of just under 25s we signed lita, turnbull and treacy. Wilsons 2nd spell was some of the worst football I've watched over the years and probably on par with what schopps serving up now. As for lee Johnson he wasn't great and at one point we unanimously wanted him sacked. Hammill came in he turned it around got us to jpt final won 8 on spin and pissed off to Bristol. No hard feelings towards him from me.
