If you like books (rather than reading on a device), you can spend ages in Barter Books, Alnwick. Especially if it's a wet afternoon. Coal fire in former railway waiting room. If you've got too many books at home, take them and they'll buy em.
I'm a book and home media geek - 4k blu rays and the like, decent movies looking and sounding the best possible way - not streamed with gash internet. Sadly not much of those to be had in China without paying a fortune for imports. and I love books, big chunky coffee table books about cool stuff, mostly movies. But also photography and history.
It was our anniversary we went for last year. Sadly, to stay in the same hotel this year would have been extortionate. Unbelievably it was fully booked too. To put it into perspective, we flew to the Canaries for a week, half board for about £200 less than a week in Northumberland would have been, room only. I appreciate the UK tourist industry is trying to recoup, to a certain degree, but they will get no symathy from me over the next couple of years when the time comes they are all moaning we have f00ked off abroad again. Pity, we have an amazing country.
Thanks for that. I do quite like having books on my shelves mind you, but very much do prefer a book over a digital device. I'll make a note in case we do manage to venture up there. Seems the drive is probably fairly similar to the furthest reaches of Cornwall which we've done quite a bit.
Aircraft – wanted to be a pilot as a kid History. Barnsley and Central European especially Walking – cliffs, moors, beaches or anywhere there’s no one else abart Whales – obviously Reading – books, books and more books. Never on devices. To me the feel, look and the page turning are all part of absorbing a story or information. Typography – just love words Cooking – lockdown has led to a vast improvement to the point its almost edible. My greatest passion used to be drawing and painting - oils water colours - and I’ve given that up for some reason. Probably work.
Watching endless YouTube videos about music theory and gear reviews instead of learning to play my instruments Watching endless YouTube videos about graphics creation instead of firing up Blender and doing it myself Watching endless YouTube videos where people chat about things so I don't need the hassle of maintaining my own friends Watching endless YouTube videos about anything, so I don't have the time to do anything Like, comment and subscribe
photography, baking, walking the dog - northumberland does indeed have fabulous beaches, volleyball coaching/playing, charity trustee, church, reading - 6 ( twitter recommended) books this year which is good going as I hadn't read a single book in the previous few years, expanding my rather small vinyl album collection
History - have an insatiable desire to understand how we are where we are and why. And debunk a few myths at the same time. Rugby Union - I coach an U12s team and referee games Pizza - built my own pizza oven in the back garden - trying to perfect he perfect Neapolitan style salami pizza Roleplaying - Lockdown plus Zoom got me back into roleplaying with some of my old Uni mates - not done it for 30 years but it kept me sane through the insanity Football - 50 years old and still playing 5 a side and still loving it. Scouting for Boys - I'm a Beaver Scout leader (6-8 year olds) - love teaching them stuff and introducing them to the world of adventurous life.
Out of interest, have you had many injuries playing 5 a side? I keep being told I'm getting too old for it (I'm 34) - recently I broke my ribs and had 6 stitches in my head. Last week I broke my arm playing. No previous injuries! I think my head still wants to play like a 20 year old. I plan on playing until 50 at least, so how do you find it? Hope you don't mind me asking
Good thread and interesting reading. I see a good few mentions of golf, I used to worship at the altar of golf but when I eventually realised that I would never be as good as I thought I was, and that nobody gets better at golf as they get older, I sacked it I've only got the headspace for one obsession and that's now fly fishing, particularly in rivers. I also like to tie my own flies I used to refurbish cut throat razors but now I'm learning how to make decent walking sticks I've got a working Springer spaniel so I'm either working him, training him or being pestered (by him) to take him out. There's no wonder I'm permanently knackered I spend too much time reading other folks' views on football but despite the rubbish going on with our club at the moment, its better than reading the news
