I agree the second quote is quite standard. But I still stand by the point that the initial quote was misleading and not helpful. For example if I simply quoted: "I want to take them... I am happy taking them", that paints a much different picture.
It would help if there was some movement & some kind of plan , no one seems to get across the front of defenders , its like they are statues , you could put perfect corners in all day long but unless someone is prepared to attack the ball then the corner taker is wasting his time .
I agree Cauley isn't the same as Kane, but he has scored a few sniffer scrappy goals. At the minute an arse and elbow goal could be what changes our fortunes. We're struggling in many areas, but poor crossing and set piece delivery needs to be practiced. We need to get at least 2 left and right foot options. Comes down to putting the hours in doing the basics.
He scored against Wednesday, Millwall and Cardiff from set pieces last season (albeit the latter two from free kicks, which I'd hope he's only taking if he's shooting). You'd want him there if the ball drops to him, because as bad as his scoring form is this season, he'd still be the best placed in the team to take the chance. I just think, he's giving the standard responses, but with the sort of caveats that you wouldn't see from players doing well and on board with their coach. e.g. he's happy to take them, if he's asked to. The fact that he said that he could be in the box scoring really didn't help either.
I honestly can’t see why he is asked to take them, he does actually get them in there, but they never give me the impression the are particularly aimed, certainly nothing anybody else couldn’t do and as he’s supposed to be a striker he should surely be in there looking to pick up anything loose.
But isn't he saying that knowing where the question is coming from? It's a leading question based on him being the start striker. Which goes back to my original point of trying to decipher anything that is purely in print. We all read it differently, where as in spoken form we might still interpret it differently but there's less likely to be such a vastly different view of what was said. Valid on the Wednesday goal, and probably the Cardiff goal, but that Millwall one isn't the type of set piece we're discussing here. If he starts taking those then we've got issues - although it's all about who can do it better which is the thing people seem to forget to mention. If Cauley puts the best ball in then he should take them, because he's not much use in the box for a poor or inconsistent delivery.
What performances have shown the players are giving everything for the gaffer then? Have I missed some because I can't remember any, and I don't count the last 15 - 20 minutes against the blunts as a performance I'm taking about over 90 minutes.
I think the best way I can describe my take on that interview is that he's making it clear that he's following instruction ("I’m taking corners because it’s what I’m asked to do.") without really saying it's something he backs, but at the same time staying professional about it. On the idea of whether he's the best corner taker or not, I'm not so sure. He doesn't curl balls in that are difficult to defend, or hit the near post like Mowatt did, he seems to drive the ball towards the penalty spot, where we hope Helik can beat the defender. We'd have to score the type of goal that would make a coach absolutely furious if they conceded. It's like a kids' team having the one player that can get the ball off the ground and into the box taking them. However, the quote from Cole was much more concerning. How can players improve if they're not sure what they're doing wrong.
What he can do vs. Mowatt doesn't matter though does it? I've seen him put many a dangerous corner in this season that's felt like it might lead to something. I've yet to see them from any of the others who've had a go this season. That's why I say the conversation ends up being Woodrow vs. Woodrow in the box rather than Woodrow vs. Anyone else.
No Woodrow vs Mowatt doesn’t matter. Was just an example of the type of delivery that might justify him taking them, rather than a comparison. Given the corners we take, can Brittain, Styles or either midfielder not drive the ball into the box in the same fashion, with Woodrow in the box trying to latch onto something that drops? Maybe not, but it’s a poor reflection if so. Biggest problem with our set pieces though is that they’re not set pieces. They’re just crosses into the box and hope. Last season you could see the different combinations attempted. Not so much this season. Is Andersen really the only one in the squad capable of a near post flick on for example?
I'd personally like to see Woodrow on the edge of the box, looking for a knock down or weak clearance to fire in the rebound. I've no idea what the likes of Hondermarck or Gomes are like at corners? Surely if Benson is back in he should be taking some to vary the deliveries, or Oduor if he is on the field.
Let's be honest, woodrows's corners are nothing that you wouldn't expect any professional footballer to be able to do. They aren't hit with exceptional pace or accuracy, they're ten a penny stuff. With that in mind it makes absolutely zero sense for the person with the best reaction shot at the club to be stood at the corner flag completely taken out of contention. That's my assessment of him taking them in the first place, my assessment of his comments is that he is making it absolutely clear to everyone that he is only taking them because he's been told he has to by the manager. He's being very professional about it but there's no doubt at all he's taking a swipe at Schopp, especially with his 'i could be in the box scoring' comment.
If we are employing and remunerating reasonably well, professional footballers who cannot lump a ball from the corner and drop it somewhere just outside the six yard box, then.....well.....I give up! Again.
That's not really the point I'm making though is it. And I have never suggested that I think performances suggest we are giving everything. But if you want my opinion, I think the very poor performances are more related to not having a clear plan, or not understanding the plan. As opposed to a lack of effort. Particularly with regards to Woodrow, who appears to be giving is all, as he has done under every manager.
Have put elsewhere, I think the whole interview, or at least the questioning about corners looks to me like the player staying professional whilst at the same time not offering any clear backing for the idea. Agree with this. The effort is there. The players want to win for their own pride more than anything else. Just not sure they have any more faith in the coach than the fans do, because of the lack of a clear plan or plan they can understand.
Woodrow should be nowhere near the corners. He obviously thinks so too. As others have said he’s not prime time Conor or Alex they are just hit and hopes.
