To me Benson seems to be playing far too far back in fact just in front of the backline whilst Gomes for the forward in a place better suited to Gonmes. Why our did JL go against the age old principle of never change a winning team by ommiting Andersen and Styles ? The 343 formation was wide open in the second half whilst in the first half Moon was caught out over and over again with Brittain trying to show him what to do at one point. What Sibbick has done wrong I don't know. V I brought him into the side and he played well on his return.

Gomes should be the defensive midfielder with Benson and Palmer or Styles (depending on whether we’re playing wing backs or not) ahead of him.

Weaker on the ball than Martin Bullock... needs to toughen up if he wants to play further forwards and mix it in the middle.

Looks like another one who can’t play two games in a week

I don’t rate him at all. A poor man’s George Moncur. Weak in the tackle. Lacks fitness. No fight in him (other than when he’s subbed).

Is it too late to ask for a refund? Rather what we wasted on him had been spent on the ground. He shouldn't be anywhere near our starting line up.

We should have spent some proper money instead of shopping at Lidl and using the scatter gun and signed Whitman last January. But we were never going to do that all smoke and mirrors

Maybe not January, because I think we had a decent transfer window. But should’ve stumped up the cash for him in the summer window before that, would’ve probably saved on fees paid for Kane and any salary we paid to James.

Of course, Struber saying that Whiteman would’ve been one for the development squad didn’t help.

My son described Benson as a show pony the first match he played. His opinion hasn't changed. I'm willing to reserve judgement a while longer, largely because I can remember thinking exactly the same thing the first time I saw Hourihane.

Thought Benson was really poor today but it’s interesting to compare comments here vs. Wednesday night and after his 45 minute cameo away at Bristol.

Consistency is important. On the field and off it.

He’s by far the best footballer in the squad. He was very poor today though

    He’s a luxury.

We can’t carry luxuries at the moment.

The only thing he tackled to any effect today was the dugout.

I missed a couple of minutes at the start of the second half. 20 minutes or so into the second half I asked if Benson had been subbed

    http://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/tykes-v-tygers.309470/page-3#post-2846326

I wasn't taking the piss, I genuinely hadn't seen him, but I couldn't work out who had replaced him. He then played a pass, and I thought, oh, he is still on the field, and then he Swan Dived in some bizarre attempt at a tackle and he was no longer on the field.

Difficult to assess his performance yesterday. He was neither good, bad nor indifferent. He simply wasn't there. Neither were the two players who are supposed to defend the channels when we don't have the ball, but they haven't been there all season so I've no idea who they are. Maybe it's a couple of those signings who buggered off that Conway told us about. That would explain the gaps, but I would have thought we would have tried to plug them with players we actually have. I remember Sibbick being particularly good at that, where's he?

It's difficult to know what's worse, the maintenance of the stadium, the communication from the owners, or the coaching and team selection.

I think he was dropping deep to try and get us moving. Moon and Kitching don't appear to be comfortable playing out from the back, and often have to find Helik or Collins for an outlet. With Andersen in the side the other night, who's much more comfortable trying a riskier pass into midfield, we got moving much quicker. That's why Gomes in particular looked so good on Wednesday. With the two inexperienced lads at the back, we look a lot more pedestrian.

He was completely anonymous in the 2nd half though.

He’s pretty much done this in every game he’s played. Look at where the ball came from for his wonder pass against Cardiff. It doesn’t help us and it means we’re way too light in the middle.

Opinions eh? I’m happy with Kitching on the ball as he’s more positive than the others. I’m less happy with the options and movement in front of him, but think he’s been a positive of an awful first quarter of the season

But thats young players for you.. but instead of having just one or two to carry through, we have almost a squad full...
Our policy really does need a rethink

yep that’s how I feel. He is too weak. Easily shrugged off the ball and lacks fitness. He’s a talented lad no doubt but he needs to show graft and determination to showcase that ability.

Benson was slow and I dont mean fractionally yesterday and very light weight when tackled or shoulder charged. Don`t think he should have started didn`t look fit at all and certainly shouldn`t have started the second half.
Finding him very frustrating but he aint alone.
