Flew out of Manchester Airport earlier today. I’m a regular flyer in normal times but have rarely seen it so busy.
There’s an oft repeated message on the tannoy loop about wearing masks at all times whilst in the airport.
In general, this is respected by most people of course but at the risk of sounding like a snob, completely ignored by the cheap flight brigade off on their latest pissup.
Is this the perfect illustration of Brexit Britain and wider problems in our society?

About 90% don’t wear masks on TFL and that demographic is a million miles away from the Brexit Britain you’re mentioning. I think that’s a generalisation from me experiences. Will see what Heathrow is like tomorrow!

I understand that but is there a clear directive that you should wear a mask on TFL? The message in the airport is that it’s non-optional as it is on the KLM flight I was on.

Well all I can do is compare with our trip to Venice and back from Dublin a couple of weeks ago.
Never seen either airport so quiet. Mask adherence was about 95% I'd say with one or two just holding on to an empty sandwich packet to get out of wearing one.
Same in Venice. Almost total wearing of masks where required. One or two of the traghetti on the Grand Canal were way too busy for my liking though, masked or not.

I’d say mask wearing on TFL is above 50%, but still a long way short of what it should be considering it’s mandatory

It wasn’t my intention to open up a mask debate but if that’s the case it’s pisspoor in my opinion.

I wear a mask at all times I'm in an enclosed space but I'm sick of hearing morons asking me why I'm still wearing one especially when I'm working but my job means I can be in a busy pub or supermarket for a job and my next job might be in cancer ward at a Hospital or even an Hospice. My answer is it's called having respect for others and caring about others wellbeing. The problem with this country is the vast majority have no interest in anybody else's wellbeing but their own we live in a totally selfish self centered country.

Just got back from a Central Line journey. Five in 50 was probably about the levels. Maybe 10 in 50. But absolutely nowhere near 25+ in 50 on any of my tube journeys in the last month.

Surely a thread titled ‘masks’ and a suggestion that it’s Brexit Britain not wearing them, is exactly that? A masks debate?

Valid point but I’d be interested to hear your thoughts after tomorrow. Have a safe flight!

I’ve visited Heathrow a couple of times without flying and found it almost 100% in terms of those wearing masks. Teesside Airport a couple of weeks ago was the same.

As childish as the BBS is, I can't believe this hasn't been taken advantage of.

    I love a mask debate.

Weren't the days of cheap flights supposed to be over once we left the EU?

Nothing to do with Brexit. It's the wider part of problems in our society bit you mentioned.

We flew to Hamburg from Manchester last Wednesday. Manchester airport was packed, and as far as I could see everyone was wearing a mask when not eating/drinking. The same was true on the flight (easyJet), and on arrival in Hamburg, where mask wearing is mandatory by law. Of all the people in Hamburg Airport, I only saw one without a mask - it was my step-daughter, who is a loony unvaccinated "querdenker" who does my head in.

Dusseldorf airport was about 70% a few weeks ago, and a lot wearing half arsed masks, noses out etc.

I wear one on public transport and in the supermarket, but generally not in pubs, bars or restaurants (including the one where I work). I wouldn't say that I had this course fully justified in my head when I started doing it, but my thinking is more or less that people need to shop for food and take the bus/train, whereas going to pubs and restaurants is generally a discretionary activity where people can assess risk for themselves and decide whether or not to visit.

That said, if there's a sign up anywhere asking me to wear a mask then I'll always respect it. The staff are the ones that have to work there.

Interestingly enough I was in Beverly last weekend and going around the shops I’d say 70-80% were wearing masks in shops. Contrast that to Wakefield today, less then 10%. I’d say on the surface it looks like a function of wealth and/or education, I guess it’s hard to extrapolate from a small comparison, but the difference was very striking and cannot be just a coincidence.
