It really doesn't show he " gave as good as he got" and I don't believe you can't see that. Unless you're going to tell me that he forced shellfish down a 15 year old Kosher Jew?

Its a get out of jail card for them Helen. Just don't do it in the first place, it's not rocket science it's simply the difference between right and wrong and even the hard of thinking can manage that. Racists are front and centre in our community because we're 90 % white. I hear it every day, they just don't care and get away with it because they never get challenged. .

    A. He has exposed institutional racism.
    B. He's accepted he used anti Semitic language
    C. B doesn't mean that he's an angel but to do A is the best thing for cricket, for Yorkshire and for anyone who's genuinely not racist

My Dad always used to tell me that being Ginger lead to years of abuse and comments. Which is a great excuse for me to post another Tim Minchin song.

The point I'm trying to make is its for those that are affected to do the forgiving but we won't move forward unless we accept that people and situations can and must change.

This is the exchange, from the Times. Ateeq Javid is a current Leicestershire, at the time Warwickshire, player. All racism and anti-semitism is vile and this, sadly, just adds another instance of it. It does not in any way 'offset', 'excuse' or 'diminish' the racism within Yorkshire CCC or elsewhere in cricket (and society) imho.

Exactly. It seems as if some people don’t realise that if you’re looking for something to discredit the accusation of systemic racism within the club and the sport, a racist exchange between players probably shouldn’t be the first choice…

So anything about Rafiq excuses the racism shown to him does it?
Are you really as thick and tone deaf as you make yourself out to be?

Because he isn’t a very nice bloke at all on a personal level. Certainly not someone you’d label as a hero.

My own personal view on racism. Goes deeper than offensive terms. Which most of us have used in the past.
    Eg I fancy a Chi--y rather than a Chinese.
Black has been frowned upon. so has coloured. With not the slightest thought of it being offensive or racist. Yet folk have sometimes been vilified. Black seems to be acceptable now. It should always have been in my eyes.
We are learning all the time.
But never in my life have I ever had the thoughts below.

    Racist
a person who believes in racism, the doctrine that one's own racial group is superior or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.

I'm not sure anyone is labelling him a hero on here. His personality is of f**k all relevance. What is of importance is the actions of YCCC.

This is a genuine question and it isn’t meant to cause offence.

Did you use to have a ‘jew’ goal in football? Essentially when it’s 2v1 on the keeper and you pass to your mate to tap in. I remember this being used loads, especially on FIFA. Never quite knew if it was jew (as in the religion) or some similar sounding word.

Never heard that used but found this.

Jew goal: a goal scored when a player "passes the ball when two-on-one with the keeper in order to provide the receiver with an open goal". The term is antisemitic, indicates a goal scored unfairly and plays on the stereotype of Jews as cheap.

I'll do my very best moving forward. Beyond the humour is a very intelligent message in most of his songs.

    I've never heard that phrase.

There are, however, dozens and dozens of terms and phrases in common usage that have their basis in racism and xenophobia.

My opinion on this: Rafiq shouldn't have spoken the way he did. It's not acceptable. However, it's not in the same ballpark as what he suffered and to compare the two is... I'm lost for words here, there is no comparison.

My secondary thought on this is: I wish people would stop trying to prove how not racist they are. It's not an attractive trait. I was born in the early 1970s, I was surrounded by racism my entire childhood. Did any of that rub off on me? Of course it did! I'm at a loss as to why people don't acknowledge the reality of our society. It isn't a badge of honour to hound people who use language that is no longer considered appropriate when no harm is meant. It's mean and ugly.
I have never been overtly racist in my entire life. I know it's wrong and I've known it's wrong my whole life and I have verbally and physically confronted people who have been overtly racist, from a very young age, against some extremely intimidating people. But I was brought up in a society that encouraged racism and that soaked into me like it soaked into everyone else. Am I racist? Probably, a little but, but I've tried my whole life not to be.
