I don’t think we’ve even played the same lineup twice in a row, never mind any delusion about implementing any sort of coherent system.
Admittedly based upon nothing more than anecdotes, the sheer number of people saying that they will definitely not renew next season, along with the loss of income assuming relegation, allied to a potential cash crisis unless the players who can be moved on generate something substantial, I fear there are genuine concerns about the long-term viability of the club. Particularly given the owners' determination not to put anything into it. I'm finding it difficult to be hopeful at the moment.
Relegation at anytime is a concern. Understand there might be cash flow challenges if we do go down, but I’d like to think we’d be better equipped than other teams who suffer that ‘feat’. Not many owners putting money in - just running up debts.
I said in comparison to others that suffer relegation. We should, in theory, be in a better position because of trying to be prudent. If the long term future of those clubs wasn’t at risk then why should we? Owners don’t put money in anywhere really do they?. Just agree the debt and overspend
In a long career, in different businesses, I never worked for one that didn’t have some sort of current debt. I do accept though, that the football business follows different rules, so let’s just hope that the cash position isn’t as parlous as some of us suspect it may become.
Isn't that a fast track to administration? If debts build up and don't relate to money put in by the owners, then somebody, somewhere, is owed money and will more than likely want it. Even HMRC pursue debts eventually.
Don’t get me wrong. I have no doubts relegation is a huge concern. I’m just trying to think about how other teams, supposedly worse run financially than us, seemed to have been ok. The wage bill coming down tends to be one reason players need to move on as well rather than just the bottom line. Is it 75% of turnover in League One?
The ‘supposedly’ bit is the important thing here. The £750k issue has started the alarm bells ringing big time. For me at least.
If we go down, there’ll be plenty of player sales, as we’ll need to get money in and reduce the wage bill. Can’t see Collins, Helik, Andersen or Woodrow playing league 1. Can probably add Brittain, Morris and Iseka to that list. Given they’ve come from Premier League academies, Kane and Benson might also be on a fair whack, might find one of the bigger spending league 1 clubs in for them.
If the players can take it as a blank canvass and embrace what the new guy says and what he wants from them we'll stay up. All on the players for me now.
I don't think it will. All the good work done in 2014/15 to 16/17 was undone in January 2017. All the good work done in 2018/19 was undone with the sales of Lindsay, Pinnock and Moore in summer 2019. All the good work done last season has been undone with the loss of Murphy, Val, Sollbauer and Mowatt. I'd say Barnsley F.C and this ownership are no strangers to rebuilds. Why should next summer be any different?
I think the two main differences this time, are that the backroom staff has been decimated, and there's no cash in the bank. We lost 3.5m last time in League 1, we can't afford to do that again, so we have to recoup that much more than we did in the 18/19 season. The circumstances around our decline also mean there's likely to be more takers for our players than there were after the last relegation.
I see where you're coming from but I think he has a free hit because the mood of the club is low. I don't think anybody expects deep down.
Would you take a chance on any of our players if you were a Championship Club and we'd just been relegated?
