Barry Murphy always says Hello when I'm in the Legends Suite, but as he's the Barnsley FC Ambassador, I think that's his job.
On a serious note, 2 of the great days as a kid were at Barnsley. Me and a mate were collecting autographs after training. Rodger Wylde took us into the changing rooms just as they finished and they all signed my reds shirt… I still remember to the day one of them shouting at Steve Agnew…”now sign his forehead Aggie” I played for a junior team managed by ken Sanderson (future mayor of Barnsley) he arranged trips to Man Utd, Wednesday and Barnsley for us, Clarke was manager and the club couldn’t do enough, even let us run around the pitch scoring goals at the ponty end, but the best bit… on the training ground earlier he literally ordered the first team into a game against us with him as referee… nil nil in the final minute and he gives them a penalty! the whole team lined up and dummy the ball until Steve Agnew smashes it in, lost one nil what a cracking day out though
Hassell Devaney McCarthy Woodrow Ben Williams Jon Parkin Lee Johnson All came across well. Seen loads of others on nights out & spoke to them. Pretty much all the Ritchie team that got up to the championship. Hecky, Kozluk, Reid, Kay, Austin etc. After every home game it seemed they were out in town. Used to see loads of them in Brammahs. Hard to imagine that happening now. They always mixed with fans & posed for pics. Trippier & Butterfield used to be out in town loads, every Wednesday night. Seemed good lads to me. Always happy to talk. Trippier was barmy. Had him as a friend on Facebook & he was out every Wednesday in Barnsley & it seemed out in Leeds at least a couple other nights a week. At the end of the season he did a full months partying in Malia. How he found the time to be a professional footballer I’ll never know. Not got a bad word to say about any of them. Everyone I’ve spoke to connected to the club have come across well.
Not met him myself but Bruce Dyer’s a great guy apparently. Used to post on Facebook asking for games of 5 a side in the area & would turn up & play with randomers who he didn’t know. He played with my mates when I had a knee injury & they thought he was great.
Nah not even him. Mind you I'd forgotten that my dad was best mates with Gordon Shepherd's brother Irving....
Johnny Steele let me interview him for an hour for my A level exam. Absolute legend that man. Have met many of my heroes over time. He was such a lovely man.
Forgot I had my pic taken with Daniel Stendel in the Plymouth hotel a couple of years back. Not a proper meet as such. And Ethan Pinnock.
Once had a chat with the on loan Vito Mannone when he came into our shop for some tech help. He couldn't get a DVD working in his laptop. Yes, it was the match DVD of that match when the ball went straight through his hands.
Shortly before the first lockdown, I had the pleasure of meeting Nicky Eaden, John Hendrie and Adi Moses at the Garrison. Being 6-8 years old during the promotion and Premier League seasons, they were 3 of my heroes. They say you should never meet your heroes because you'll be disappointed, but I wasn't in the slightest. I firmly believe Adi Moses is the nicest bloke I've ever met.
He is. He was my favourite player at the time, always gave his all. He seemed a bit disbelieving when I told him that! Nice that he takes his kids to Oakwell now too.
Aye, he's such a humble chap. He says he still gets stick for the own goal he scored at Elland Road, but was chuffed to bits when I began waxing lyrical about his volley at home to Norwich.
In the late 60s I think it must have been, Eddie Lloyden turned up at our house on crutches after after his cartlidge operation looking to buy a bed my dad had advertised for sale. Then in the late 70s early 80s Derek Bell lived in Ardsley, we got chatting and used to go out drinking mainly mid week, and around the same time I went to our twin town Schwabisch Gmund on a sports trip playing ping pong, Steve Agnew and Paul Cross were on the same trip playing football of course and we had some good chats, they always say hello and stop for a chat when I see them now.
As part of my Social Studies course work i was fortunate to interview the whole 80/81 team on the subject of football violence. Mick McCarthy set it up through Roy Simmons. I turned up with a fair sized ghetto blaster. Apparently certain players were nervous over it lol. My mate still has the casette of the interview stashed away
He lent me his scrap book after giving me a guided tour of the crematorium. Used to play football with him for Ardsley house. He walks past my house occasionally.
Hasn’t every Barnsley fan above a certain age had a drink with Gerry Taggart? Usually a Friday night before the match?
