A 99.5% survivability rate. Evidence to suggest natural immunity plays a huge role. And you think it’s ok to cast off the unvaccinated and segregate them from society?

It isn’t even a significant majority that will be fine if they get it. It’s a vast majority. That doesn’t make it any less significant of a pandemic, but let’s not pretend the media haven’t stirred up the same kind of hyperbole everyone is so keen to call out on other issues.

Don’t do that Loko. Telling me what I think now. It’s the worst type debating on this board. And let’s just forget about the huge strain the nhs is under and the 100+ deaths a day, the collateral damage. Just so long as the unvaccinated keep their right and to choose and continue to jump to the front of the queue when they fall ill, trampling over everyone else’s rights in the process.

So does vaccination stop the spread or not? Those claims seem to have gotten quieter and quieter

Spot on. Unfortunately schools are clearly spreading the virus, if only we'd spent a tiny fraction of the £37bn that track & trace cost on aircon units for school classrooms....

Depends what you mean by stop the spread. They’re very effective at reducing incidence of symptomatic disease (so we see fewer cases because fewer people will develop symptoms and need to get tested). They’re also very effective at preventing severe disease (i.e. stopping people ending up in hospital or dying). The SIREN study shows some evidence that antibodies (either from previous infection or being jabbed) are effective at preventing infection, but it’s still ongoing so hard to say how long that immunity lasts and to what extent that applies to everyone (summary here https://ukhsa.blog.gov.uk/2021/06/18/siren-one-year-on/). I’d guess the immunity comes from sterilising antibodies that stop the virus replicating so you never get to a point where you’re symptomatic or infectious to others, but that won’t hold true to the same extent for everyone and will possibly wane over time? (I’m not a microbiologist though so I’m probably talking bollo.cks).

I don’t see where I told you what you think? Apologies if so.

I wouldn’t want the NHS under more strain than it needs ever, but how are we comparing vs. other Decembers right now? Also, why are we doing nothing about the increase in non-Covid related deaths in the home? It’s 100+ a day as a headline number but they’re not all purely down to Covid I don’t think?

How about limiting care to anyone who hasn't improved their fitness and lost fat and weight over the last 22 months ? oh and packed in smoking ? They're the real epidemic waiting to happen and they've had plenty of chance to change their behaviour. I don't subscribe to this opinion BTW but it's out there.

Oh and finally a Tory government who shall we say are defunding the NHS?

I'm double vaxed and I'm having the booster on Saturday, I'm pro vax but don't want vaccine apartheid.

Yes but if say 100% of the population are vaccinated then 100% of people in hospital with it would also be ?

I meant stopping you passing it on to someone else. The big thing about them was that they stop you passing it on to a vulnerable person who could then die which was why vaccine passports were announced. I've just not seen any evidence that it actually does stop the spread at all.

Obviously it helps stop YOU getting seriously ill but thats only half of why we were pressured into getting it under threat of a two tier society.

My understanding is that it reduces the viral load and period for which you will be infectious.

Yep I think* for those people who get sterilising antibodies it basically means that as soon as the virus lands in your mouth/nose/eyes your body immediately attacks it so it never has chance to replicate which means you’re never infectious to others. Obviously the degree of that will vary from person to person and it’ll also wane with time post original infection or vaccine.

*treat post with caution, not a doctor

Quite right, but the misinformation posted on here claimed that most people in hospital with Covid were unvaccinated, that simply isn't true.

Totally false. My mum is a nurse and worked on the wards and says most are vaccinated and harder to treat because they can't risk any extra treatment because it may interact with the vaccine. That's not a dig at the vaccine because it's normal not to be able to mix certain medications

*** Made up figures to illustrate the point ***

Let's say 100 people have COVID

90 of them are vaccinated. 10% are admitted to hospital. That's 9 in hospital.

    10 aren't vaccinated. 50% are admitted. That's 5 in hospital.

There's more people in hospital because of COVID that are vaçcinated.

But, you are 5 times more likely to be in hospital if not vaccinated.

This is why medical statistics and epidemiology uses rates and odds not counts.
