Not my 1sr but 1-0 down til 89th min v bromsgrove and winning 2-1 was great. One of my favs was 3-3 away at stoke and winning replay at oakwell
I'm not sure whether it was my first one, but the first one I recall being at was 07/01/1995. Barnsley 0-2 Aston Villa.
Wasn't my first but went by train to Rochdale to see us win 3-1. From memory we went 1 down, then the snow started. @Terry Nutkins dad volleyed in with his wrong foot from a corner, somebody else stuck one in, then Jimmy Seal hit one from 89 yards that flew like a peregrine into the top corner. After the game, walking back to the station, we saw a mini upside down sliding along the snow-covered road, with 2 blokes sitting on its underside waving Rochdale scarves and shouting obscenities. Good day out.
Nope! Evans got the equaliser in the third round v Cardiff with the last kick of the game. I remember him racing back to the half-way line to ask the referee if the goal stood, as he had blown for full time and there was no time for the sides to kick off again. I remember us getting a corner far left at the kop end and George Hamstead scuttling across to take it. It was a good one and the Cardiff defence scuffed the clearance straight to Barrie Thomas, but he must have got a shout from Evans, who was behind him and let the ball go through his legs for Johnny Evans to smack it home. 1-1. The Port Vale game scorer was definitely Dick Hewitt who got rave reviews for his overall performance and was touted to be a big money move (say £15k) to Plymouth and other clubs higher up the food chain. In the end, when he did leave, it was for York City and definitely not £15k, which York would have had to have paid in Kit-Kat bars.
I went to that as well and sat in the little wooden shed of a stand. My memory says 3-0 but I could be wrong. They had one player that pulled us all over the field.
Southport at home. Always seemed more exciting somehow the FA Cup in those days, when it meant something and winning meant a chance of a tie against a big club that would actually in all likelihood play their full first team!
I went to that game and recall it as a classic and thrilling cup tie, which engaged you throughout the 120 minutes, which included extra time. Highlight was both goals by Johnny Byrne, the first a near post header to a good cross, probably from Hopper. His second in extra time and the winner was superb - the cross from the left, probably from O'Hara, was slightly behind Byrne, but he did a bicycle kick and smote it straight past Ken Jones in the Scunthorpe goal. I always thought that Johnny Byrne was a class player with great skill and a very sound footballing brain. £2,500 was a give away to Peterborough United, but he had scored a hat trick against them, so they knew they had a good un. He was their top scorer from inside forward in his first season there and went on also to have a good few seasons at Northampton Town as well.
Not my first, but possibly the best. Pugh & Alan Little were the hardest ******** in English football. Not like the two kids we have now. OK was 4th division... John Peachey, the man of style & grace in the team. Not to be confused with myself John Peachy.
Barnsley 3-1 Bournemouth January 1999, I can't remember the scorers now. Closely followed by the 4-1 win against Bristol Rovers where Craig Hignett scored a hat trick. Then we had the Spurs game with the David Ginola goal.
I remember going to Vale park in the sixties to a cup replay & we won either 3 v 0 or 3 v 1 , I wonder if it was this tie
Absolute beast. Not dirty, no sneaky ankle taps or going over the ball but the hardest lad to play for Barnsley in my time. Could play as well.
In 1961, I was just 9 years old. My dad was a life long reds fan, and his team had reached the 5th round, where they were paired with higher league Luton Town at home. I had been to just a few games by then and none of them have registered very deeply, but I could see that this one was important. Barnsley won with a Jackie Lunn lob over the keeper from 40 yards. I could see it meant a lot to him from his emotions after the game on our walk home. In the 6th round, we drew Leicester City away. We got a 0-0 draw. We had no floodlights in those days, so the replay at Oakwell was on a Tuesday afternoon. There were rumours that those who wanted to go would be allowed out of school. The rumours were wrong, and the team was beaten 2-1 I think. My memory is not what it was but I remember Bert Leeson (Keeper), Colin Swift (RB), Duncan Sharpe (CH), Eric Brookes (LB), Bobby Wood (RH), Jackie Lunn (RW), Frank Bartlett (IF), Bert Tindall (CF)
Barnsley 1 - 0 Caernarfon Town 1987 - it was a replay and I think it was Rodger Wylde who scored the goal.
I think, and i’ll stand corrected, but it was Darren Wood that did Gwyn Thomas. The game is on Youtube somewhere. Great Cup game and one that I do remember.
