A fee for lads at minute, there confidence is absolutely shot to pieces and sometimes you need a ruff arse just to drag lads through mire.......a don’t advocate fouls but someone who will take one for team can sometimes unite rest of players to give that extra 10%, we’ve currently got players shying out of 50/50’s :(

Styles, Brittain, Helik, Anderson, Morris, Frieser and Sibbick all seemed to develop pretty well last season.

Would you say they have developed further this season playing a different style? Do you think they've improved as footballers this season?

We look better with Morris and Helik back, basically. Depending on who goes/gets injured we could well be back to square one before we've time to win a league game.

Perhaps the mere presence of Val, even in the opposition dugout, was enough to put the fear of God in the players and remind them of the standards they were expected to live up to.

I am sure I have mentioned on this site before that we should have signed Blunkett. At least he can hold on to a lead.

The irony is that when the owners took over and we adopted the current strategy of managerial recruitment it was based on a desire for the team to have a gegenpressing mentality, which they'd decided was the way they wanted the team to play. Successive coaches were recruited on their ability to coach teams in this way, although each from Stendel through to Ismael had their own interpretation of it.

Last season under Val was pretty much the perfect version of the gegenpress for Barnsley FC (i.e. a team who don't have the resources to adopt the counter-pressing done by Premier League teams). In comparison, Stendel's tactics were defensively naive and Struber's overly defensive. Val found an effective balance between the two and the results spoke for themselves in terms of league position. Despite this, its now being referred to generically as 'hoofball'.

From what I've seen of Schopp and Asbaghi's tactics so far, I'm not even sure they could be described as a gegenpress style, so have we now abandoned that as our fundamental requirement for an incoming coach?

If someone could tell me what style of pay of system were trying to play I’d be over moon, I watched the Blackburn highlights again earlier and it gets worse every time I see it........we’ve gone from super ***** to now ***** under this new guy, if we’re not down by Easter I’ll be amazed!!

I still can't decide whether we've actually improved under him due to any change in tactics or if it's simply an ever so slight improvement because Morris is back and andersen

I would say it’s returning players so far. We look slightly better organised defensively but still too easily beaten down the wings. Can’t see much improvement in forward play other than Morris being available.

Has anyone considered the role of the players in this whole sorry mess? I reckon a few of them were expecting a big move over the summer - probably following the exodus to West Brom. When they found themselves starting the season back at a Barnsley bereft of leadership, my guess is that a few chucked in the towel there and then.
