Been thinking about my time watching the reds and I can’t remember any time when we’re successful without at least one dominant midfielder. I’m going back to John Bettany for this. We’ve had some great midfielders since then and I can’t see that we’ve got one now and unless we can find one we are without hope. Glavin Banks Butterfield Agnew Redders Hourihane Who’s your favourite?
How the fudge has Butterfield got into that list? I mean he was decent like but I’m not sure how he’s in with that company.
Redfearn for me. For the player he was but also the influence and leadership. honourable mention to someone who doesn’t probably quite make the list but Sheridan did a great job for us, doing what was needed to make the team work.
Can we have Glavin and Banks - as they were in the same midfield - not to mention the one who always gets overlooked but Id love him in our team now Ray McHale
Granted I didn’t see much of Glavin, I was too young to appreciate him, but the best all round has to be Redfern, scored 30 yarders, inside the box, headers, free kicks, penalties, proper box to box player and leader with an unreal engine, trained hard, played hard, that boy had it all for us.
Never said it was a complete list and I thought Butterfield was a great midfielder. Like a lot of other good players he got dogs abuse from a section of the fans.
I've been watching the Reds since 1955 and I agree with you. Glavin is the best player I have ever seen for us..
When those three were playing for us Terry Venables opined that we had the best midfield in the second division.
