I remember talking with the scousers before his debut for us at Anfield ,I was saying as long as we can keep it below 3 goals, I will be happy. He had a blinder and So did the team and one Brian Howard.
The grandad of yesterday's Cambridge goalscoring hero Ian Ironside. Ian's dad also played league football as a goalkeeper.
I remember people talking about Harry Hough and also Don Leeson and Carrie Williams but the first keeper I saw play for the Reds was Alan Hill.
It’s an obvious but do you remember that Joe Waters that played for Grimsby back then?.....had some good games against us he did the little git!
After we'd stupidly sold Ray McHale to Sheffield United, Joe Waters was the player I wanted to replace him. He always played well against us.
I remember watching Alan Hill , he was a class act who if my memory serves me well he ended up playing in the top flight for Nottingham Forest , we also had Alan Ogley around that era who was superb & ended up at Manchester City ( I think ) , I used to love Gary Pierce who was barking mad but although Muller was superb I think Watson has been the best in my time, its a pity his career ended so early as I believe he would have gone all the way in the game .
I like Terry Donovan. He was their sub for the league game at Oakwell, and put up with me yabbering in his earoyl throughout the game. After which he told me to meet him round the back of the main stand, and he turned up with a Grimsby headed paper, signed by the whole team and manager.
How there was never a serious crushing incident with fans getting injured or worse is hard to belief at that ground for the away fans especially at the end of the match coming out of the ground up that walkway with walls at both sides. you could literally lift you feet up and get carried along, if you had gone over it would have been game over no way you would have been able to get back up with the momentum of the people behind you. very scary looking back what could have happened back especially as a kid with your parent trying to hold you close.
