I enjoyed the 1-0 win over them in the FA Cop 1st Round, November 1977. Graham Collier took a left wing corner, in front of the Ponty End, and Neil Warnock rose to head home the only goal of the game.
Them were the days!......broke mi heart back then when Mick Butler left and signed for them, particularly with mi dad being a town fan as well!
But then we went and beat them at Leeds Road shortly after Butler had joined. One of my early away games. Either 2-0 or 2-1 but I remember Kenny Brown scoring a screamer from 25 yards. Think Peter Burke scored the other….BigLil?
Peter Burke......when at skool(White Cross), me and couple classmates did a project on Reds, we wrote to club and they invited us to spend day at ground, must have been 1975ish, we got given tour of ground etc. and it were Peter Burke who was apprentice at time that showed us around, they gave us some old programmes to go home with, and do you know we thought we had been given world, it was a great day, most of it spent under old west stand, can remember little dressing rooms, little gym and small boardroom with its wooden panelled walls......we caught bus there n back at 2p a time, proper memories!!!
He once smashed a clearance into the old Brewery Stand terracing and hit me plumb in the boat race. I was about maybe 11 or 12 at the time. Knocked me clean off my feet. Embarrassing and painful at the same time lol.
Thank you, my old friend. We're having a bit of a tough time, although nothing in comparison to you. All the best to you and your family, mate.
I seem to remember us beating them 1-0 in the 60/61 season on the way to the quarter finals where we lost to Leicester in a replay. We were underdogs then as well.
