I was with SSE until last July when I moved to Octopus.
SSE were continually upping their prices and their customer service was the pits. Everything seemed to be run from South Africa. They were crap to deal with.
Up to now no problems with Octopus and much cheaper.

I am area sales manager for a large energy company and we aren't switching customers and haven't been since October, it's not the right thing to do at the minute. Prices are ridiculously high, anyone who fixed before October, good on ya. The advice is to do nothing, not only from Martin lewis but from all or most energy companies. We are being told that ofgem will announce how much the price cap will rise by on 7th February. Everyone will then have a better understanding of where things are likely to be, at the moment the cheapest fixed price tariff on the market is 41% dearer than the variable. Best to stick with what you've got and see what February brings

I’m with Octopus. Been with them for a while but the fixed rate ran out in October! Great timing.

I understand Ofgem are going to dramatically increase the price cap shortly, but I don’t think there should be a price cap at all. It should be left entirely to the Gas companies to charge whatever they like. That’s how the market works. Their obligation is first and foremost to their shareholders. Everything and everyone else should be behind them in the queue.

I'm on UW too. I'm also a distributor, but not touched the business side for ages. Maybe it's the time to kickstart it up again.

I was with peoples energy and got moved to a British Gas. Currently paying exactly same with BG as peoples as I’m on this special peoples tarif until June. No doubt it will go up massively.

    I was previously with eon.

    How much?! :D

We pay £73 a month gas and electric in winter (£50 odd in summer), £60 for broadband/tv/landline (don’t use tv and hardly use phone but cheaper than just broadband for the speed we get) and £6 sim only (3 gb which is more than I use and it rolls over plus unlimited calls/texts).

Best advice seems to follow Martin Lewis’s advice which is mainly to not switch at present.

However, that may change within a few weeks so keep checking him out.

    It’s a nightmare though

I know!! It’s for Will’s work and gaming and to be fair, I also enjoy high speeds. His work pays some towards it each month too.

I was paying £158 with octopus energy and the cheapest fixed deal I could find was £270, it was a no brainier for me to switch for cheaper with more services included

Just done meter readings as our fixed rate tariff runs out tomorrow. I've already said that I'm letting it switch onto the variable rate but, out of curiousity, I looked at what the renewal option was from the current provider (So Energy)

    Current rate (ending tomorrow):
Standing charge (gas): 22.05p per day
Unit rate (gas): 2.8p per kWh
Standing charge (electricity): 22.05p per day
Unit rate (electricity): 16.02p per kWh
Early exit fees: £5 per fuel

    Recommended rate (2 year fix):
Standing charge (gas): 26.11p per day (up 18.4%)
Unit rate (gas): 7.87p per kWh (up 181.1%)
Standing charge (electricity): 26.81p per day (up 21.5%)
Unit rate (electricity): 30.159 per kWh (up 88.2%)
Early exit fees: £40 per fuel (up 700%)

Yeah, looks like a bargain to me. Sign me up and take my money already!

Variable rate looks to be as follows, based on tables shown on the website:
Gas: 26.11p standing charge, unit rate 3.96p
Electricity: 26.81p standing charge, unit rate 20.07p

Wow that’s expensive electricity, far above standard variable rate. How long have you been paying that?
