As someone has quoted below, unless it’s moving (similar speed as a jet airliner from the naked eye) it would be moving across the sky and be visible for not much more than a minute. if you have a mobile device you can download a number of free apps … ISS detector will tell you exactly when the Space station is passing overhead, for how long and travelling in which direction. I also like the app Planets, once again free but you can effectively point your device to the sky in any direction and it will show you the planet names and stars etc.
It will be Sirius. Follow the three stars in Orions belt down to the left and the big bright star is Sirius.
I've just realised why the oakwell car park has been so busy these last few nights. It's the influence of the dogging star!
