Expected to be open Late Summer 2023 Another season of walking round then BREAKING Barnsley Council has announced that work will begin on the new Market Gate Bridge, which will replace the Jumble Lane Crossing, in February, and is expected to be completed by late summer 2023. Estimated cost is £9.7m, almost £7m of which is from external investment
I'll honestly never be able to get my head around why it takes so long to complete construction projects in this country.
Work on site isn’t due to start until July. Most of the bridge deck is to be built off-site and starts next month. As I mentioned in another thread, the delay is a result of the preferred contractor falling into administration days after the contract was signed. Full statement at: https://www.barnsley.gov.uk/news/market-gate-bridge-construction-to-begin/
Should be able to use the temporary bridge safely on match days next season given how few people are likely to be going!
I agree - especially when the initial construction timeline was 6 months, but this work does also include all the public realm on Midland Street and Interchange Square, and the changes to the road layout and public realm on Kendray Street at the other side.
And if theres one thing I've learned about roadworks it's that they refuse to do 2 things at once. On the subject of this kind of thing running over. I notice that the roadworks on the dearne valley bypass still say delays expected till summer 2021. Useless
Usually because there’s a ridiculous amount of contractors and sub-contractors working on a project and they can only do the bit of work they’ve been brought in to do at the time they’ve been scheduled to do it.
I do wonder whether the start on site in July is in order to accommodate the Cineworld fit out. That’s a big job and they’ll probably need access from Midland Street.
So that explains the delay. It doesn't explain why a relatively small bridge takes a year and a half to build.
I’ve already said it seems a long time for a bridge to me too (although it’s a lot bigger than some people might think). I don’t work in construction and don’t know of other similar-sized projects to compare the timeline with. The documents I saw previously had a construction timeline of 6 months, but the bridge design has changed since then and the scope of the work has increased.
After the last home match, one of the interchange staff weren't letting people who got off the train from Leeds over the bus station bridge. Grinds my gears. A lot actually walked round too (he was later told by a colleague people from the train could use the bridge by which time it was too late). I don't know the weight restrictions of the interchange bridge, but surely when we had a home attendance of less than 4000, many of which drove, they'd be able to safely use the bridge? I don't mind walking around unless it's raining when it pisses me off. Oh AND the sign on the Jumble Lane Bridge says the bridge is locked 1 hour before kickoff, but they ALWAYS close it at half one for 3pm kickoffs.
A wonder where the bridge will actually terminate on the other side, from the illustration it appears that traffic coming down off the flyover will go under the bridge, has anyone seen any layouts of the roads
