Watch it It's astonishing. That performance sold millions of albums in the UK. Uncool, not played on radio, but loved. It's silly, it's really daft, like all the songs on the album, and that's why it appealed to us Brits. Bat out of Hell by Meatloaf is an unbelievable piece of art. It's Queen with Halloween and Ferris Bueller, it's Monty Python with Jimmy Page on Guitar and Bach on keyboards, it's over the top nonsense and it's wonderful. I'm going to watch the above and then I'm going to sing my heart out to this: Thank you Meatloaf, you silly bugger, you've been with me my whole life.
Just watching now, these songs have been with us years and never gone a year without hearing his stuff.
Thanks for this mate. Not seen this performance before but been listening to this song on and off all day. Without referring to Google I've no idea what year it was? But almost almost every Friday/Saturday around 2000/2001 this would be my chosen track on the pub juke box once the lock-in officially got underway. Slurred/Screamed word for word (outside the 'commentary bit), from start to finish, after 10+ pints of Smiths and half a bottle of Southern Comfort.
Was seeing tributes on news through the day. He's not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate why folk like him. Didn't realise until one of the reporters put something out among the lines of he was the real deal when it came to mixing music along with film like performance. Which made sense seen as he was both in films and musician. And you can see that in the first link you posted. Theatrical if you like. Enjoy, like I said, it's not my style, I'm more electronic 80s scene, but as my ageomitor clicks on each year, I tend to appreciate things like this more and more. Hope your keeping well, mate
It's from The Old Grey Whistle Test, early 1978 I think. The album was out, but it was doing nothing. They were invited to do TOGWT and performed Bat out of Hell. I've never seen that performance, I don't think it's survived (I'd love to see it if anyone's got it). But people went mental for it, and Meatloaf and the band were invited back the following week and they did this. It's this performance that cemented Meatloaf's career, and Jim Steinman's essentially. The album took off in the UK and eventually the rest of the world. Personally, I think Karla DeVito is the star of the show. Her vocals are amazing. And it's not even her vocal on the album.
I opened it up on full screen when I watched it the second time so could see the title. 1979 so good memory! I didn't think it was the same vocals but was putting that down to studio vs. live. You're bang on though. Stunning performance. I absolutely bloody love this song.
You got me on a right rabbit hole of different versions of this on YouTube there. I was lost to the world for an hour. Love it. Reminds of my stag do a few years ago in Cologne. We ended up in a karaoke bar full of Germans. My uncle and this random German woman got up and did this song, full theatrics and everything. Genuinely one of my favourite ever memories, a brilliant day rounded off with that. RIP Meat Loaf.
I think the album was popular not least of all because of the variety of songs that appealed to different ‘ groups’ from the drama of Bat out of hell, for the biker and rock fraternity, the teens with Paradise by the dashboard light, Heaven can wait and 2 out of 3 ain’t bad for the romantic types. As much as I love the Album it was ‘overplayed somewhat’ and I think people just grew a bit bored of it. It is however one of those albums that whichever track is played on the jukebox it would get most of the pub singing, young and old alike.
A great piece of art. My younger self would just call it shít, I really did hate the loaf but I can now see it’s value.
A true ‘Epic’ of an album, in fact calling it an album is doing it an injustice- it’s more of a broadway musical, a full production and story just without being on a stage. It somehow managed to appeal to absolutely everyone regardless of age/usual musical taste.
Me too. A lot of it was bang average but every so often you got something out of this world like the above. Thanks to Jay for posting once again one of the classic sets. I’d forgotten just how good that was. Not just a song but an amazing performance as well.
I remember the original airing of Bat Out of Hell on The Old Grey whistle test it was accompanied by a wierd video , and thinking WTF have I just heard , it was the talk of the King George the next day !!
Keep forgetting about BBC 4 mainly because I can’t get it in HD anymore so doesn’t appear when I scroll through the channels. Must have a look Most of the classic sets are on YouTube but not all and as Jay mentions the Bat out of hell one isn’t there
I could check Google but where’s the fun in that? This is literally my very first time hearing about ‘Whistle Test’. Are we talking Later with Jools but in the 70’s?
