... have finally got round to investigating Downing St parties and are likely to take weeks if not months, meaning the Sue Gray investigation won't publish during that time.

A criminal investigation at the heart of Westminster. Surely even the tories can't continue to prop this up now?

This is Johnson's handiwork, make no mistake. Gray report was probably not going well for him - bring the Met in, resulting in a few civil servants taking the hit (fines/sackings/redeployment). Johnson announces a far-reaching review of Downing St activities and the Gray report gets kicked well down the road, to the point where everyone's forgotten about it.

I'm not so sure. This just prolongs things. I'm not sure his backbenchers will allow that to be spun out for weeks and months on end.

I read this morning that DePfeffel tried to have the chair of the 1922 committee replaced a little why back for someone much more pro Johnson. No love lost there.

I notice Dick sidelined every question about the officers who were at No 10 when crates of booze were being carried in , maybe another Police Force ought to be investigating

    Roughly translates as

We haven't had enough time to come up with yet more bull that the gullible* can swallow. Therefore we have kicked the can down the road for an unknown amount of time until we do. (Or enough time to make it look like a proper investigation has taken place by the law before we find them not guilty)

*Not, that we the British public surely have anyone that can be this gullible....

Bojo should resign simply for wasting precious police time in having to investigate - he won`t of course.

The only mad thing about any of this is the law makers thinking the laws don't apply to them then lying about it when they get caught.

Interesting to have watched the urgent question and DePfeffels statement (primarily on Ukraine), and the general piecing together of events.

Firstly, only the absolute sycophants on on the tory benches. No sign of any of the expected leadership candidates. No sign of some of the more prominent ERG mob. That this is now a criminal investigation is a step change. Particularly from the Met.

They said they'd investigate if anything criminal was referred to them. I'm guessing they've been given that.

It also seems that dePfeffel knew this was happening, had a cabinet meeting, and dropped it in right at the end to prevent any discussion about it. The Met have also suggested they are happy for the full Gray report to be put in the oublic domain, not just a precis. It's Downing St and/or the cabinet office implying they won't publish while the Met investigate.

I don't see how this helps DePfeffel.

I went out in the car earlier and the radio was on radio 2, Jeremy Vine show. He had a phone-in about Johnson and there were several calls and texts saying how brilliant he's doing. One even said that he was the best PM since churchill. I can't help thinking that they weren't ordinary members of the public but Tory activists trying to bolster Johnson's standing with the public.

Nothing will happen. The Tories will do the usual thing of threatening the police with budget cuts and hey ho, nothing to see here. Remember the law breaking regarding Brexit? yeah, we'll get the same answers. nadda, niet, nowt.

I heard that. Bizarre. I can see how you come to that conclusion but would what they say change anyone’s mind? Worrying to think there are people around like that around. And that some of them could be near me…

It's all a ploy to get this lying racist Prim-Minister off the hook the Met and Dick are just as bent as the government.

Am no Tory and I think Boris and team have behaved like fools but what a waste of money and resources this will be by having an investigation after the event!......most they can do is fine folk, surely we should just stick with Sue Gray enquiry.

It's a waste of money to hold people at the very top our government accountable for potential criminal offences?

    Interesting.

The trouble with the Sue Gray enquiry is that it can't really be fully independant, given she's a civil servant that works for the Government.

But it does seem particularly convenient that the Met are finally investigating this now, with stories of the Gray enquiry being particularly damning. Now all this will do is drag the affair on, which will give Johnson the hope that people will forget about it, or calm down the reaction, just like they did with Barnard Castle.

The Met should have been investigating this long ago, In fact, the officers at Downing St at the time should've done something.
