Moneyball doesn't work in football. I can't stand the way the club is run. It's toxic at the moment. Poya, Conway, Khalid, half the squad, they can all fook off. Drivel yet again today. That ruled out Helik header was from what I remember, was our only effort on target I reckon. What a sorry state of affairs.
Could have pointed to this article about Sevilla. Particularly liked: One key evolution in Monchi's recruitment has been the use of data and artificial intelligence in scouting, player development and training. Two years ago the club created a department specifically for this purpose.’ "I am in love with data. I am in love with analysis!" says Monchi, who says he could talk for an hour just on this topic. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/60212510 Moneyball is thrown at teams but the way it was done in baseball is nothing like how football teams have used it.
Our club. The club we have all supported for years. It's dead. It doesn't exist anymore. All that exists now is a player trading company that happens to have a red work uniform and trade from grove Street despite the owners repeated attempts to relocate the company elsewhere.
Did you have a club when moneyball was calling the tune in division one last time out or last season when we were world beaters? Yes you did, you revelled in it, you bragged and had bragging rights over your mates who supported other local teams. Clubs do well one season and then they don't. We're not Liverpool or Manchester United. We're a provincial town with a football team in the second tier of the best and most competitive league on the world. Yet some are still fickle and bairn and mope about like the owners should put their millions into our club. They're not obliged to by the way. When they read some of the absolute bile posted on here it's no surprise to me they are reluctant to invest. Would you? I doubt it. You'd probably say F**k um.
Not true. In the past the primary objective was results on the pitch with player trading coming as a secondary. Now we have deliberately and quite openly admitted to changing the style of play because the one that got us into the play-offs, whilst being extremely successful as a football team, wasn't successful enough for the player trading that Pacific media group clearly prioritise ahead of football.
He the L***s guy? Not sure. But I thought it was funny that he mentioned Artificial Intelligence so positively after this thread on the BBS the other day. https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/data-and-football-be-afraid-be-very-afraid.311335/
I dont mind and quite like the policy of looking for young exciting untapped potential when : 1. We put a spine of older pros in the team to guide the younguns and bring them thru games 2. We dont gamble on injury prone donkeys in a bid to try and get lucky. I.e oulare 3. we evolve our system as we improve and go for better players each time rather tha. Scraping the barrel in non league. Far too many mis hits. Plenty of pros not making the grade in the prem and champ we could look at to see whos not had the right development. 4. we play attacking football not this side to side posession ****. 5. we give it everything and leave nothing out there. 6. we stop selling to the first bidder waving a few reddies under our nose and actually put decent oroce tags on our players so we can evolve the model as noted in 3.
Can I ask you? Who are you taking Claudio Gomes or Matthew James? Are you taking the 20-year-old fresh and hungry Lewin Nyatanga OR the 28-year old that's got the world on his shoulders and had the stuffing of losses and defeat beaten out of him?
We could have both. That’s the point youngsters with some experience around. We are currently desperate for a Matty James or Solbauer at the moment though
In a way ours is the opposite of moneyball. Billy Beane focussed on odd balls and misfits (in terms of technique) and often recruited older players.
Yep. And there’s basically zero resale value in baseball so it’s pretty much just a buzz word that doesn’t make a lot of sense.
I want to go and watch a team we can be proud of. I want a club that puts success on the pitch before anything else. Is that really too much to ask?
