It would also give Johnson the opportunity , at every PMQ's, to claim Labour had voted against raising benefits just as he repeats about Labour voting against raising the amount of money for care. In both cases what he would say would be true, but only due to the fact Labour wanted something better but it would be voted down.
So it would have done no harm to vote against then ? That way there would have been a higher chance of a rebellion on the Tory side and if not a chance of it at least making the news . Instead starmers labour go right along with it and we are served up with starmers feelings being hurt the next day . Any ideas how starmer voted on it btw ? Not sure myself but happy to have a guess .........he abstained .
Before anyone gets on Starmer’s case about Jimmy Saville, take a look at the honours he was awarded. He was an avid supporter of Thatcher and none of these honours came from Labour. He was a Tory icon wheeled out at party conferences annually. For a Tory Prime Minister to accuse the leader of the opposition of favouring Saville is opportunistic beyond belief. https://www.liquisearch.com/jimmy_savile/honours
See the post above yours. The reality is that even under these clowns (with the exception of PMQ’s which is purely performative) parliamentary business is boring with a large government majority. Ordinarily we’re governed by a cabinet, with a nod through from the HoC. At the moment we’re largely governed by a cabal within no 10.
It’s a dead cat. On Sunday before it happened, everyone was talking about Sue Gray, the Met and parties. Now everyone is talking about Starmer and Savile. All this at the cost that Starmer is now at risk from Nazi nutters. Which is a price worth paying to Johnson. There’s an even greater payoff that I bet Johnson never imagined. He’s not only put a flame under the Nazi’s, he’s got the Corbynites screaming like banshees about Starmer too. Double bubble or utterly fcu king pathetic, depending how grown up you are.
About 1970 my sister was 11, and she wanted to go to some fete near Hemsworth that was being opened by JS. My grandma sat her down and told her there was no way she’d let her go, as she’d heard some shocking stories about him. It’s a shame grandma died before we were old enough to ask her for the details.
I thought your first post on the thread was bizarre but glad I read on. Johnson and Starmer being two cheeks of the same arse is the most ridiculous thing I’ve read. Starmer might not exactly be the pin up boy for socialists but to suggest he’s one and the same as Boris Johnson isn’t stretching a truth to highlight a point. It is a pure and simple lie.
Thatcher tried 4 times to get Saville knighted, even writing to the Queen to plead his case, successfully on the 4th attempt......
Let's face it Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson is no better than Donald Trump, or Viktor Orban, a popularist, pork barrel politician, who will lie, deceive & rob you blind & if you are stupid / racist / embittered will still get your vote.
I see Gove is saying we should "move on" from the Savile saga. Last week they wanted us to move on from partygate. What disgraceful, self inflicted Boris gaffe will we be encouraged to move on from next week? If we have to keep moving on at this speed I'm going to get nauseous and throw up.
The ridiculous thing is; it works. There’ll be Tory voters all over the country chuntering that they’re sick of hearing about parties and Keir Starmers feelings being hurt. Pre Brexit they suspected the public quickly got bored with politics. But now they’ve proved it; we’ve had enough of experts, have some belief in the country, get Brexit done, it’s time to move on.
Whether people like it or not this is the culture that a lot of the Labour centre & right have enabled. When there previous leader was getting punched & spat at & smeared as a spy or anti-semite many of them stayed quiet or even worse added to the smears. You’ll see the likes of Streeting & Reeves condemning the smears when they themselves smeared their previous leader. Of course what happened to Starmer is wrong & shouldn’t have happened but this has been building for years & should’ve been stamped out years ago but the difference was the media & many MP’s were happy with it back then because it was for their own political gain. I just hope for his sake shouting in the street is all he endures & he doesn’t have to suffer like Corbyn did. His front door must be the most recognisable in the country with how often it was on the news. Hopefully that won’t happen to Starmer.
I voted Labour for 30 odd years before Corbyn became leader, I voted Labour when he was leader and I’ll hopefully be voting Labour another 30 years (unlikely but I can hope). if you can only view the last week through Corbyn shaped goggles, you’re looking in the wrong place for the problem. Your problem isn’t others, it’s you. We’re not the centrist dad ruining the party, we’re the party faithful. We were here before JC and we’re still here after him. Corbyn had his chance, it didn’t work, it wasn’t entirely his fault, no Labour leader stood a chance in 2019 (it was a rerun of the Brexit vote). But, no party leader generally gets more than 1 failed shot at a GE, and Corbyn got 2. I really do wonder if any of the obsessive Corbynites have ever stopped to think about what the end game is? I can understand being peeved, I don’t really understand the anger though, and I just don’t get what they think they can achieve. But then I’m one of those ‘weird’ grownups whose main concern post divorce was to work together to bring the kids up properly rather than see them as a tool to torture my ex.
I agree Starmer should let Corbyn see the kids and stick to the divorce settlement that gave him the house
I’m not talking about the results of any election. This isn’t about that. This is genuinely about the safety of our MP’s. There’s loads of them I don’t particularly like but I don’t want to see any of them attacked or harassed. I’m serious when I say I hope it doesn’t get any worse for Starmer. The point is surely you can see how much worse it got during Corbyn’s tenure? Jo Cox was murdered & the week after Dan Hodges is in the Mail with Corbyn in a coffin saying ‘Labour need to kill vampire Corbyn’. Corbyn gets punched & hit by someone with an egg & journalists are posted ‘hope the eggs ok’ & then Labour MP’s are giving interviews to these same journalists. Genuinely how many other MP’s or leaders of the opposition have there been where you can recognise the front of their house? It’s mental that that was allowed. The problem is now they can’t just turn the tap off. It isn’t going to get any better. It’s seen as fair game by many now to harass them in the street & attack them. Every time it happened it should’ve been condemned & that’s not just the Labour Party, that’s the Tories, Lib Dem’s or whoever but many of them are playing games & are happy to see colleagues / rivals get hassled if it’s for their own political gain. I remember posting on here that Starmer would be easily smeared due to his past job. There’s been lots of false Starmer / Savile smears doing the rounds for the last couple of years. Add to that Labour already has a bad reputation due to grooming gangs & supposed cover ups in several northern towns with Labour councils. And then throw in Mandelson been his adviser & his ties to Epstein & you can see how easily he’ll continue to be smeared.
