I still think he's an exceptionally gifted footballer. The lad's had three managers in the last year, had the last two managers pull his starting position out of a hat every week, and will have undoubtedly had his confidence shot to pieces by the team's overall performances. Of course he's going to be a bit off the boil, and probably play a stinker here and there. Our coaches still can't decide if he's a left back, left winger, centre mid, number 10, left sided striker, or even a right sided inside forward. He needs to know what he is as much as we do. He's 21. He's got a great first touch and can turn on a sixpence. He's got a good finishing ability, a good long range shot, and runs his blood to water. He's a bit light, but so are many of the best players in the world. You can't hold that against him. He's one of our most promising (and imo best) players. I just hope we don't ruin him.
Not so sure about good finishing ability?....how many goals this season?...he has got skill I agree but to be a championship player you cannot keep giving ball away in middle of the park like he does too regular, Hope he comes good but I also think lack of true pace will keep him at a level no higher than League 1 or a struggling championship team such as us......LWB is his best bet for success but needs regular games in that position........just my opinion mate
He's a fantastic player that will only get better, needs a proper manager that will get him playing with a smile on his face again.
If all the players played 90 minutes while continually smiling I for one would find it quite disturbing.
He's been messed around by two head coaches this season more than any other player in the squad. I don't recall anyone being asked to play so many different roles since Anthony Kay was at the club (maybe Sir Bobby, if you include his stint in goal). Poya's obsession with players being on their non-natural sides so that they can cut it is one of the reasons why he's so unsuitable for the role. Towards the end of the game last night Styles was being ushered towards the corner flag when trying to get a cross in by defenders who knew they simply had to stop him turning away from goal to do so. He's undoubtedly one of the key assets we have in the squad, and he's doing his best in a variety of unfamiliar roles that seem to change on a weekly basis. Unlike some in the squad, I don't see any lack of effort on his part, but can fully understand why he'd be the most frustrated player within the squad given the flexibility he's expected to adopt, and seems to do so without complaint.
He was a star player in a team which finished 5th in the Championship last season. Last night he provided the assist for our goal and an excellent assist in the first minute for what could have been a goal, had Quina shot first time instead of taking the ball so wide of the keeper.
I don’t think Callum’s playing anywhere near the poor level as some are making out. Of course, he isn’t at 100% BUT he still gives everything for the team. Great energy and will give everything for the team. I must admit if I was the player's agent I would be going into Oakwell today and telling them what I think of the position selection. It’s a car crash. Also, I heard the normal idiotic nonsense from Barnsley fans last night and when someone says it I will instantly turn off. Why are we playing a left-back at right-back? He isn’t a Fecking left-back. Never was, Never will be. Like Clarke Odour, Marcel Ritzmaier, Alex Mowatt …. All CMs with attacking intent.
Interesting then, that his performances last season, which won plaudits from everyone and, if we believed the rumours, had bigger clubs sniffing around for decent money (weren't Southampton interested?), were all from LWB? I've seen very, very little to suggest his best & most natural position is anywhere else.
It’s a case of two things Micky Finn. The positions do have some transferable skills and we had 4 options to play it, 3 were CM’s and one was an RB last season. Footballers do play in a certain position and get bought for good money in those positions but will medium-term play another position. Stones/ Holgate. Bought playing RB but where always CB’s going forward.
He's a solid championship player in a decent side, nothing special in a struggling one. Doubt he'd command a big fee now after this season. Lacks pace to make it to the top.
Are you a fan of the haunted look they've all got ? Might help us win a game if they could enjoy playing again.
I have been critical of Styles this season and I believe rightly so ......however well done today Callum you’ve put a shift in, keep it now son......very well played!
Controversial but I don’t think he’s all that. There arnt many championship sides he’d regularly start in. Quina is one year older and he’s better in every way. Quicker, stronger, better on the ball, better in the tackle, better vision.
Obviously still a player in there. However I personally think he’s been put back two if not three seasons. For a club that’s meant to be so focused on young player development, it’s pretty $hit how he’s been mismanaged since Val left
Play styles in the position he played all last season and he walks into 80% of championship sides. We signed him as a centre mid and put him onto the left last season but I see his long term future in that position as opposed to middle of the park. Quinoa is quality but think it’s unfair to compare players who are better in completely different positions.
