The head coach finds the club's transfer policy of only signing U23s with little or no experience at this level Charming!! Personally I'd go with suicidal, deranged and bat **** mental :D:D:D:D

He probably also finds it stupid like most of us fans but he is hardly going to go out and slag them off publicly given he has only managed one league win in his tenure.

Don't know where I read it (might have been on here). Interesting stat I thought. And food for thought with a possible counter argument.

96-97 promotion squad in arguably our best ever season. Only 10 of the players used would have fitted our spreadsheet. 2 top scorers and POTS both in their 30s.

That was a particularly charming journey.

The thing is you don't need loads of experience. In 2015 we got Kevin Long on loan and re-signed Hammill. In 2020 we signed Sollbauer. Last season it was Mowatt that stepped up to the plate nurturing Palmer after it was realised we didn't need James and were going to be more direct.

I'll reserve judgement until we've played three or four more matches. Hopefully these players have learnt on the job.

Johnny Hendrie was approaching his 33rd Birthday when he signed for us in 1996. How would players like that ever be signed by us now?

EDIT - Neil Thompson was 33 as well wasn't he....

Getting close to 30 years ago though to be fair. There's a reason more and more footballers in their 30's are finding themselves struggling for clubs or dropping lower down the leagues than they might have in the 90's. Football has moved on, but not to a level where every player needs to be under 24.

I'm sure the team that nearly took us to the promised land prior would have laughed at suggestions you could supplement the squad with a Dutch CB, a Trinidadian striker, and a Serbian midfielder.

A squad that was perfectly balanced between youth and experience too, arguably shows how effective it can be to have a few wise old pros knocking about. I know there's always a risk of an old pro taking one last payday, but the lesson there is that you recruit your experience as carefully as you do your youth.

Eaden, Liddell, Moses, Jones, Watson all came through our junior ranks (pre-academy days) guided by the likes of Eric Winstanley. We also bought well - Bullock, Appleby. Mix quality young players like that crop in with Redfearn, Davis, De Zeeuw, Hendrie, Wilkinson and Thompson. It was a squad that had everything and was still put together on a small budget.

I was fortunate that back in that era, I was often involved in the medicals of our new signings. Spent quite a bit of time talking to Neil Thompson and the physio, Mick Tarmey, on the day he signed. Tommo had the enthusiasm of a 10yr old, he couldn't wait to get going, knew what quality was already there, and having obviously chatted with Wilson before signing, he said that part of the plan was to get some experience and know-how through the squad. Told it's own story really. Our current board would do well to pay heed to this.

Is it policy, or just a case of signing a dreadfully balanced squad this summer. We've signed Solbauer, Ritzmaier, Helik, Frieser, James, Morris, Cole and Oulare, all 25 or over since promotion.

Trouble is, I don't think some of those signings would be possible now. An equivalent to Hendrie would be on fortunes and a Redfearn would've moved on long before 97. As have Hourihane and Mowatt.

Exactly this. John Hendrie in this era is probably coming off a £40k a week contract and looking for someone in the Championship to give him £20k or more.

Someone in the Championship poaches Redders with a £25k a week offer no questions asked.

Bit of a heart over head signing there to appease the fans, he's barely played this season.

The craziest transfer from when I first started watching, when considering current equivalent would be David Currie. Sold to a club that had won the European cup 10 years earlier. And signed him back when it didn't work out. It's like us selling somebody to Chelsea now, and being able to afford to resign him a couple of years later.

A player is now forever beyond our wage structure if we sell him to Stoke or Preston.

Not sure what point I'm trying to make, just makes me feel old.

Absolutely fair points Loko(and @leythtyke ), can't disagree with that.

But do you not think that there is value in us looking for experience via our recruitment model as there is youth? Sollbauer a prime example. I'm thinking of somehow trying to achieve balance in the squad overall. I can't see any other way we achieve stability on the pitch. I can't really substantiate my opinion as such, but it feels like we are happy to spend relatively significant fees on potential that may, or may not, produce results on the pitch and in terms of future transfer income, but not on experience, where I'd argue we are more likely to see an impact on the pitch in terms of results and stability, not that anything is guaranteed.

I'm certainly not advocating stupid spending, we don't have to look far in the Championship and League One to see millions spent buying mediocrity and failure.
