I genuinely think this will be a rubbish fight. Won't live up to any hype whatsoever. I hope I'm wrong, just can't see it.
If Khan doesn’t win it will be embarrassing for him. Brook’s been making welterweight for his entire pro career (16 years or so) & is dead at the weight. Brook had a great chin in his prime & even moved up & took bombs off Golovkin that were destroying world level middleweights which is why I think some are been fooled into thinking that Brook has the far better chin in 2022 against Khan. The truth is he’s either shot to bits or the weights killed his punch resistance or as I believe somewhere in the middle. If this fight was in 2011-2017 I’ve no doubt Kell Brook would win, if it was at 154 I’d strongly favour Brook but every pound you come down in weight puts it more in Khan’s favour & by the time you get to 149 it should be Khan’s fight to lose. The Brook - Crawford fight was bizarre. Brook came out & showed he still had a world class jab & timing & took the first two rounds but the minute Crawford landed a shot of note his legs deserted him & it was over. That was at 147. Khan was poor from the first bell against Crawford & looked poor against Vargas in his last win of any note but he still has them fast hands & if he can land a flurry of punches against a drained Brook I think there’s a good chance he’ll wobble & stop him early. I do think it’s only a 4 round fight tops. I can’t see how it gets to the later rounds. And I’m still bitter Khan robbed us of this fight when they were both in their primes so for that reason I hope he’s the one that gets stopped.
That's probably the most accurate description of this I've read and makes it sound just as pointless and depressing as it is. Wouldn't be surprised if one of them got really hurt just to put the cherry on top.
I won’t throw too much shade Amir’s way on this one. There’s always two sides to every story and once Brook beat Porter he went on a three fight run of some of the worst title defences I’ve ever seen. When Khan was ‘ducking’ Kell he was at least getting in with decent fighters. Their boxing CVs are worlds apart in my opinion. Not because Broom wasn’t capable but because he never seemed that willing - which is a surprise considering he went to the US and beat Porter.
A cynic would suggest they've always pushed this fight away, knowing that when they're both done, it'll still make cash. And here we are. And I'll be buying it. Because I love boxing. And as you know, I adore Natasha Jonas.
I think that’s harsh. You have to remember that the only reason the 2 mandatories happened against Bizier & Dan were because the IBF went that far down the rankings to find a mandatory challenger as several others turned it down including Khan, Bradley, Alexander & Thurman. I don’t really have an issue with the Gavin fight as it was a short notice job. Granted there promoters were taking them different routes but if Hearn can’t get Kell the unification fights what’s he going to do? Vacate his belt & lose his only bargaining power? I don’t think there’s any excuse for Khan for swerving the fight. The claim he was taking bigger fights in the States is nonsense. From Brook becoming world champ he’s only taken one bigger fight in Canelo. He was happy getting paid well to fight the likes of Algieiri & ancient Collazo. I think when fans follow Brits & buy their tickets & buy their PPV’s they should take the big all British fights that the public want. It seems to be the only sport where the best don’t compete against the best when it’s most in demand. Khan has a lot more name value on his resume but I don’t really buy the idea that he has a great resume. He got Alexander & Judah at the right time. Both never had a decent win again & Alexander had been suffering from substance abuse. Malignaggi & Kotelnik were decent wins but there’s only the Maidana fight that I class as truly world class & I think Brook’s win over Porter was slightly better than that. However Khan definitely has a better resume even if I don’t think he had the better single win. Brook’s resume would’ve looked better if he’d got some past it Yank’s with name value but I don’t know how he would’ve got the unification fights. In hindsight maybe sign with Arum or Haymon but then Hearn got him two huge PPV fights. It’s all if’s & buts. He was a bit in the who needs him club. I remember Jessie Vargas wanted £3m to unify with him & Hearn decided it would lose a fortune & the next thing he was fighting Golovkin instead. His own lifestyle didn’t help either. He probably got two mandatories imposed on him so quickly because of the stabbing incident. That held his career up a good 18 months.
That’s certainly what Khan’s done. It’s easy for him. He wins & he gives it the ‘I would’ve always beaten him & this proves it’. He loses & it’s ‘he’s only beaten me because I’m past it’. Brook always wanted it earlier in his career because it was his ticket to superstardom.
Actually, you're probably right now you've put it like that. Can't blame Amir at all. He was making big money anyway. Knowing he can always fall back on this fight. Good business sense. Kell's definitely got more on this. Ordinarily, I'd like him to win, but knowing a few lads in the Sheffield gyms, and the local journos who've had relationships with him, I'm not very keen. He lives a number of lives by all accounts. Not a very genuine individual. At least with Khan you know he's a čúńt.
Is Khan a čúńt? Not disputing your view, just as someone who follows boxing pretty casually he always seemed alright apart from maybe being a bit of a shagger.
Maybe an overly strong description. But what I meant was, at least we know what Amir is. Whereas Brook, there's a strange old backstory if you dig into it. Anyway, I'm looking forward to being £25 lighter, watching them have a war, after the lovely Natasha Jonas gets the world title she deserves.
Outside of his marriage misgivings he's been a great kid. The amount he's given back to the world whilst raking it in himself can't be ignored. Many an initiative that he's setup and influenced, and not that I watched it but he was really well liked in that Celebrity Jungle thing where it's difficult to hide the real you. He's obviously not the sharpest but blessed with unreal talent, our youngest ever boxing Olympian and medal winner (I think?), and gone on to achieve a phenomenal amount. Possibly I am. But I believe a fighter, when they really push their promoter, can make things happen against these organisations. You don't need to deal with lame mandatories if you're trying to unify or go to the US. Once you drop down the rankings it's easy to make those fighters go away - but it's also easy to have some home defences in Sheffield and make a lot of money. We always assume Brook chased the fight, and maybe he personally wanted it the most, but there's a million people behind the scenes managing your path. Back to back fights at the MGM Gran against Collazo and Devon Alexander are arguably bigger fights globally than fighting Brook. Not to us Brits and not to us personally as boxing fans (which I get is your point), but Khan was always obsessed about being a global superstar. Different motivations maybe kept them apart and maybe Brook needed to leave Sheffield more than once to help make the fight happen?
This fight is AMAZING and totally full of nostalgia for those of us that have watched both mens careers. We know what it is, them being past their best and whatever.. And who cares. ALL OF THE LIGHTS ALL OF THE LIIIIGHTS
Absolutely no relevance to the thread really but I read that as "I'll go khan on penis" about 3 times before realising it says points. Not a clue why
I knew there was an Amir Khan/Barnsley v Coventry link but I’ve only just remembered what it was. The last time we played Coventry away on the same day that Amir Khan fought was 2nd February 2008. He won on points to be crowned Commonwealth Champion and we got smashed 4-0!
A couple of "Has Beens" who have no intention of boxing again after milking the gullable public to help them retire.. I cannot believe how people are so easily led..
