Reports The Times today. Apparently it will be 'VAR lite' with pitch side displays replaced by replays on tablets. What could possibly go wrong?
Football needs to look at how cricket handled technology. At first it was ridiculous until they changed it so that now it's only rank bad decisions that can be reversed (umpire's call). VAR should only ever overrule clearly obvious errors by the officials. It shouldn't be used to decide if a player's left bum cheek was half an inch offside.... While we're at it, the offside rule is now unfathomable and should revert to how it was 30 years ago except there should be 2 new lines on the pitch 25 yards from each goal line and offside can only be given in these zones.
Agree about the zones. I've often thought that it isn't fair on the attacking team if their player is flagged off side just inside the opposition half. To me the onus then should be on the team that's lost the ball to get back.
I think VAR is a great idea but its just being run by incompetents' as you say they should learn from other sports how to use it effectively' rugby league is a prime example' VAR is only used when requested by the referee' the biggest issue with football is they use it for every litttle thing whether the ref wants it or not' let the ref get on with his job' if he makes a mistake so be it but let him do what he's paid to do...
The bit I object to is when the ref goes to the screen he goes with the decision of the video ref. The video ref is a referee. You're giving up your own opinion for someone else's. It's ridiculous. Why have a ref on the pitch if they haven't got the bo llocks to say "that wasn't clear and obvious I'm sticking with my original decision"?
Why can't the VAR ref say it wasn't "clear and obvious" we're not checking it. The VAR decisions should be based on real time and did the referee make a blunder there?
Yay. Subbuteo lines drawn across the field! Can't be offside outside of the line and can't shoot unless inside the line closer to goal. Perfect solution
How is that different from deciding whether a player is in his own half or not? My suggestion is not perfect, but it does bring back some sanity (remember the goal scored against us in the cup last season against Chelsea? By the old rule, the scorer Abrahams was offside twice). My suggestion would also address the reason why the rule was changed, ie to prevent the "Arsenal" offside trap on the halfway line. Such a tactic would be far more dangerous 25 yards from your own goal than on the halfway line and the centre of the pitch would be far less congested as a result. It also has the benefit of the linesman having less pitch to cover and be less likely to be out of position to make his decision. The 25 yards was plucked out of the air, 30 yards might be better. Trials could be held in the lower leagues to establish the best placing of the lines.
I don't care two hoots about VAR, but for the love of God can we please go back to the system where the line official waves the flag as soon as the offside rule is infringed, rather than waiting until the players have chased the ball down.
This is the stupidest rule ever thought of' what happens when an offside player chases the ball down because the lino can't flag then said player collides with the opposing keeper injuring them both' it very nearly happened to Collins earlier in the season' can't remember who we were playing' its an insane rule..
It isn't different, and I am not having a go at your suggestion but more at the players who will develop strategies to take advantage of the rule and then the TV companies who will then exploit the controversy.
