Sting song from the 80s including lyrics. For those who’ve never heard it.
    Very poignant

Putin won't stop until someone stops him.
The only real question, in my mind, is do we stop him now (before the stakes get higher) or later when neither side can back down and no one has a choice.
Its plain to see that right now Putin sees us as weak/divided and so is prepared to go all in. Unless we change his opinion of us he will carry on.

So.... Hitler annexed part of Sudetan land to supposedly support the 'majority German peoples' 'wishes' who were living there . Hs next move was to take over Czechoslovakia entirely. We know where that ended up going.
Whilst I am not an advocate of war, if we follow the path of 'appeasement' with a madman and liar such as Putin, we will repeat the same mistakes resulting in another war, this time with the potential to go nuclear.

He must be stopped now at all costs unless we wish to repeat the insanity from 1939. Putin is using exactly the same playbook as Hitler.

I fear economic sanctions will be nowhere near enough. He has now proven beyond doubt he is a liar, given his100% assurance (last Wednesday) that " all troops would be removed from Belarus by the weekend" only to renege on that and actually strengthened the numbers on the pretence they were needed for peacekeeping. The amazing thing is he also insisted the 100k+ 'military exercise' troops were being withdrawn knowing full well that in this day and age, with spy satellites monitoring every move, it is very easy for NATO and the US to prove or disprove any claims re troop movements.

His brazen contempt suggests he actually believes that NATO and the West will do nothing emboldening him to continue his expansionist plans (again exactly the same as AH) making him even more dangerous.
    Scary times!

Jesus Christ. What are you talking about now? What do you want them to do? Send 100 nukes over there? They don't look soft, they look intelligent

Economic sanctions. All properties seized that have been purchased by all overseas investors and left empty for 6 months. Freezing of all Russian bank accounts in the U.K. hard hitting an far reaching. Money is the only thing that will talk

Banning trade with ANY company registered in Russia and that includes any oil or gas. It will hit them harder than it will hit the rest of the world.

In this day and she with sanctions and trade embargo’s… what exactly would be gained by this type of invasion? Is it just that he’s trying to show his phallus is biggest in the world wide phallus waving contest? Is it his final hurrah to make sure he’s in the history books? Or is there some other reason Russia thinks this move is a good idea.

I don’t really follow warfare or this kind of thing. But watched a documentary following the uk forces around the uk. The whole warfare part when the Russians were being dodgy in our waters just seemed like children playing games with potentially deadly outcomes. A bit like rival football hooligans gesticulating through a fence.

Would appreciate if anyone who knows can explain why putin thinks it’s a good idea.

The guy is a total despot, out of control because its impossible for Russians to check him internally, they just go missing!
War i a terrible thing but what he comes out with is ridiculous, its sod all to do with him what Ukraine wants to do, its their country.
I hate the thought of war but if he gets away with this, what is the point of NATO, and where will he stop.
I said in a similar thread , I don't think its the same as Hitlers Germany when he whipped up a national fervour, most Russians would probably like Putin gone and just get on with their own lives.

Not so sure it's as black and white as that. Ukraine isn't a country of long-standing and has a mix of etnicities and languages. War should be a last resort, always.
Always teared me up that song. We've had plenty of time to deal with Putin but our wonderful leaders would rather take money from him to keep themselves in power.

I first thought this was just posturing and after a few weeks it would ebb away. but day by day it's escalating and getting more and more ridiculous. I don't know if anyone watched Putins address and the ramble he ensued upon. It was bizarre. We've seen lots of Putin down the years and he's done some abhorrent things and crossed the line many times. But I've not seen such a bizarre statement. And the interaction with his "ministers" was on another level altogether.

I don't think there is the support within for this invasion and if some internal coup was started, I don't think it would take much to topple him. Whether anyone does that, thats another thing altogether.

What I do suspect though, given his revisionist nonsense yesterday, if Ukraine falls, the other former USSR states are in deep trouble. I've been lucky enough to visit Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. All had horrific stories to tell, but showed a proud but humble people who have endured misery and fear but refused to be cowed by it. I worry their futures may head back towards that past. And if the West steps in, I think the future could well be markedly changed for all of us.

Problem is the Tories are heavily dependent on Russian Funding. Putin has been destabilising the West for some time all I expect from De Feffel is posturing and saying one thing and not doing too much to upset the Russion donors
I dont see a good path ahead given our current leadership

Trump wouldn't do anything differently to Biden, in fact I saw a Biden quote that "Putin will be hit with sanctions like nothing he's ever seen" which sounds exactly like what Trump would say.

Putin is clearly a despot, and the most important thing to him is for Russia to be seen as a major player on the world stage. We need to humiliate them, accept Ukraine into NATO, cancel Nord Stream, and seize Russian property. We need to show that we are willing to accept the hardship of not relying upon Russian energy.

ANY Russian company? That would affect hundreds of legitimate Russian businesses across many sectors including tech, leisure and hospitality, food and drink, auto parts etc etc. Business owned by hard-workiing people, the vast majority of whom are VERY unlikely to be Putin supporters. Businesses which provide jobs for other, completely innocent people. Hitting state-owned behemoths is absolutely correct, but including all small and medium sized businesses on that list is punishing regular folk for the fact that they've got a **** leader, most of whom want him in charge of their country no more than the rest of the world does.
