Hopefully its not just another attempt at a Greenwash. And I certainly wouldn't expect clubs to go as far as they could. I mean if you did, you'd have to look to buy more local players to reduce air travel. That's never going to happen. But fair play to FGR. It's refreshing to see any business take a very ethical sustainable approach and not be shy in talking about it and encouraging it.
Totally agree - the Toby Tyke graphic is amazing and should be used. I know folk say it's "bloody cartoon" but look at a lot of the crests of US sports teams and they're exactly that.
Reminds me of training tops/t shirts I had when I was a kid. Very appealing to the younger generation. Personally I miss the simple white Yorkshire rose with the green leaves.
As a 10 year old I got such a buzz out of seeing my team in the Panini Premier League sticker album Went from 'I've got two Ravanellis!' to swapping out 2 of 3 Darren Barnards in 12 sweet months Halcyon days
The obvious fatal flaw under Mansford with the rebranding exercise, was that the club probably went to great expense, and put it in the hands of someone who didn't know the town or club. A couple of seasons ago, Watford allowed its fans to design their own club crest. They set out some careful specifications in terms of size, and it's ability to be applied to both football strips and social media platforms alike. Some of the entrants were spectacular to be honest. It could be one way of repairing some of the relationship with the fans. It will engage the fan base no end. The problem at Watford was, after receiving over 4000 entries, the club decided to stick with its current crest. So the hornets still have a badge with a moose on it. https://amp.footyheadlines.com/5157923965230389881/
Completely agree. Leveraging the fan base which should have a fair few creatives in there is an obvious win at a time when there is little light to be seen. Utilising a fan base in the thousands for skills, services, ideas, resources is one of the biggest no brainers going.
Its funny that they used that as the badge in the Premier League sticker album. I've spoken to fans of several other clubs, who have said they remember us having Toby Tyke on our badge, even though we never actually have. I was talking to a Rotherham fan about it not too long ago, and had to go through our shirts for the last 40 years just to prove that we've never had Toby Tyke on our strip.
Things have evolved, but you're right, that we had a mismatch in our branding, and arguably, that we don't have our own badge/logo, still do. I recall plenty of our videos in the 90's and our TV identity were using the toby tyke badge.
The Latin would be fine as a nod to the town, but the crest is the town's, not the club's. We should have our own.
Always liked the idea of soemthing like Athletic Bilbao's crest with the outline of Barnsley main in the corner. Then have a White Rose, Toby Tyke or the Oakwell logo on a red background on the other bit.
I’m sure a crest could be designed Incorporating Toby. ( perhaps holding the white rose) and the Well and Oakleaf. Maybe with pit headgear in the background. I know that sounds busy, but the current one is a very busy one.
I started watching in 1990, and for a long time, it felt like we never really had a single badge. The old well badge was still used on some merchandise, but we'd moved to using the white rose on the shirts. Then probably mid-90s switched to the Toby Tyke badge on merchandise and that was used on any TV footage as well. I probably became blind to the use of the crest, as I still associate the rose and Toby Tyke badges with the club more than I do the crest. Though people that started watching in the last 15 years will clearly be different. I hate getting old.
Our club are in the dark ages with trying to be green. I don't expect us to go all Forest Green Rovers but we could be a heck of a lot better. Little things to start with can make a big difference. Give the option of veggie food at the kiosks. Stop with plastic bags in the club shop. Offer people the chance to have their own container filled in the stadium for drinks to cut back on the amount of single use plastic we use on things like warm drinks and pints of beer. Look for a company that has electric coaches to take the players and fans to away games.
